  • Patent number: 5595629
Abstract: A papermaking process comprising forming an aqueous cellulosic papermaking slurry and adding a cationic polymer and an anionic polymer to the slurry to increase retention and/or drainage is disclosed. The anionic polymer comprises a formaldehyde condensate of a naphthalene sulfonic acid salt (NSF) with a molecular weight range of 500 to 120,000, while the cationic polymer has a molecular weight range of from 500,000 to 20 million. After addition of the polymers, the slurry is drained to form a sheet, and the sheet is dried.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 22, 1995
Date of Patent: January 21, 1997
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
    Inventor: Arthur J. Begala
  • Patent number: 5185062
Abstract: A papermaking process includes the steps of adding to the papermaking cellulosic slurry first a high molecular weight cationic polymer and then a medium molecular weight anionic polymer, to improve drainage and retention. The anionic polymer includes ionizable sulfonate.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 17, 1992
Date of Patent: February 9, 1993
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
    Inventor: Arthur J. Begala
  • Patent number: 5098520
Abstract: A papermaking process includes the steps of adding to the papermaking celllulosic slurry first a high molecular weight cationic polymer and then a medium weight anionic polymer. The cationic polymer is added after the addition of filler, but before at least one of the shear stages to which the slurry is subjected prior to sheet formation and drainage. The anionic polymer is added after the shear stage which is subsequent to the addition of the cationic polymer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 25, 1991
Date of Patent: March 24, 1992
    Assignee: Nalco Chemcial Company
    Inventor: Arthur J. Begala
  • Patent number: 4191645
Abstract: Use of a cationic copolymer prepared by incremental addition of a cationic monomer during the polymerization reaction of a nonionic monomer in the dewatering of sewage sludges provides improved performance characteristics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 1977
Date of Patent: March 4, 1980
    Assignee: American Cyanamid Company
Inventors: Arthur J. Begala, Jr., Ernest D. Kaufman
