    Abstract: Sucrose which is found in thick juice such as obtained from sugar beet or sugar cane may be selectively extracted therefrom by passing an aqueous solution of the thick juice over a solid adsorbent comprising a stabilized type Y zeolite such as Union Carbide Corporation LZ-Y20 adsorbent, preferably bound with a water permeable organic polymer. The sucrose will be selectively adsorbed thereon and separated from other thick juice ingredients such as raffinose, KCl and betaine. The sucrose is then removed from the adsorbent by treatment with a desorbent material comprising an alcohol. The desorbent is flushed from the adsorbent with water prior to the subsequent contact of the adsorbent with the feed stream.

    Abstract: An adsorptive separation process for separating methylparaben from a feed mixture comprising methylparaben and wintergreen oil, which process comprises contacting the feed mixture with an adsorbent comprising a type X or type Y zeolite, selectively adsorbing substantially all of the methylparaben to the substantial exclusion of the wintergreen oil and thereafter recovering high-purity methylparaben. A desorption step may be used to desorb the adsorbed methylparaben. The process is carried out preferably in the liquid phase.

    Abstract: Sucrose which is found in molasses such as beet molasses or cane molasses may be selectively extracted therefrom by passing an aqueous solution of the molasses over an adsorbent comprising shaped replicates of particle aggregates consisting of a carbonaceous pyropolymer possessing recurring units containing at least carbon and hydrogen atoms. The sucrose will be selectively adsorbed thereon and separated from other sugars such as glucose, fructose, and raffinose which will inhibit the crystallization of sucrose in a subsequent operation. The sucrose is then removed from the adsorbent by treatment with a desorbent material comprising water.

    Abstract: A process for separating a selected component from a fluid mixture of components by employment of an ion exchange resin. Fluid flow is maintained through a column containing the adsorbent in at least three separation zones, an adsorption zone in which the selected component is adsorbed by the adsorbent, a purification zone and a desorption zone from which the selected component is displaced by a desorbent material. There is also a backflushing zone, upstream of either the feed or desorbent stream inlets, in which the direction of fluid flow is opposite the direction of flow through the three separation zones. The zones are periodically shifted through the column by advancing the input and output streams. The backflushing serves to decrease the density of the resin bed thereby controlling the pressure drop developed through that bed when it is in service as part of a separation zone.

    Abstract: An adsorptive separation process for separating ortho or para-nitrotoluene from a feed mixture comprising the isomer to be separated and at least one other isomer of nitrotoluene, or for separating ortho and para-nitrotoluene from a mixture of all three isomers of nitrotoluene, which process comprises contacting the feed mixture with an adsorbent comprising a type X or type Y zeolite, whichever is appropriate, containing at the exchangeable cationic sites the appropriate cations, selectively adsorbing substantially all of the nitrotoluene to be separated to the substantial exclusion of the remaining isomers and thereafter recovering high-purity ortho, para or ortho and para isomers. A desorption step may be used to desorb the adsorbed isomers.
