  • Patent number: 4579202
Abstract: Brake holding apparatus for use in a vehicle having a fluid pressure operated braking system including a master cylinder and at least one brake cylinder. The apparatus includes a trapping valve movable to an open position allowing fluid communication between the master and brake cylinders, and to a closed position blocking this fluid communication so as to trap fluid pressure in the brake cylinder. The trapping valve is biased for movement to its open position. Means are provided for moving the trapping valve to its closed position. A bypass valve allows fluid communication from the master cylinder to the brake cylinder, but blocks fluid communication in the opposite direction. The trapping valve is fluid pressure balanced such that fluid pressure trapped in the brake cylinder has no effect on the position of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4569670
Abstract: An accessory drive especially adapted for use with internal combustion engines having a crankshaft is described. The drive comprises a variable pulley transmission having a pair of spaced pulleys drivingly interconnected by a power transmission belt. The pulley transmission having a driver pulley drivingly connected to an engine crankshaft. The driven pulley includes a pair of pulley flanges, one flange is axially movable with respect to the other flange, the driven pulley also comprises a pair of pulley flanges, one of which is axially movable with respect to the other flange. The spacing of the flanges of the drive and driven pulleys determines the drive ratio between the pulleys. Another pulley is connected to the driven pulley, to drive the accessories. A drive pulley spring urges the drive pulley flanges axially toward one another, and a driven pulley spring urges the driven pulley flanges toward one another.

  • Patent number: 4561529
Abstract: A torque-limiting clutch includes an input member, an output member, and a friction element relatively movable to an engaged position for frictionally engaging the clutch and to a disengaged position in which the clutch is disengaged. An actuating device develops a clutch-engaging force tending to move the friction element relatively to its engaged position and thereby effect clutch engagement at a predetermined torque load setting. A thermal spring responsive to a small temperature increase develops a clutch-disengaging force tending to move the friction element relatively to its disengaged position and thereby effect rapid clutch disengagement. The thermal spring is formed from a shape memory effect material.

  • Patent number: 4489621
Abstract: A dual wet output clutch for a continuously variable transmission which acts as a starting clutch upon a signal from a throttle induced hydraulic fluid supply to connect the transmission with the vehicle wheels and replaces a mechanical forward-neutral-reverse selection by hydraulic actuation of one of the dual clutches to provide forward or reverse power. Also, a secondary mechanism is utilized with the reverse gear to deactivate the reverse clutch in the forward mode and reduce drag loss.

  • Patent number: 4471861
Abstract: Speed and temperature responsive drive apparatus includes a friction clutch which may be interposed between a vehicle engine and its associated cooling system fan. The clutch is biased toward engagement by a conventional spring and also by a thermal spring. A bladder develops a centrifugal pressure upon rotation of the apparatus, which pressure relieves the biasing forces of both springs.

  • Patent number: 4402676
Abstract: A stiffening arrangement for an endless chain which is constructed of a plurality of interleaved sets of links joined by pivot means which comprises an elongated stiffening member retained in grooves formed in chain side links and which contacts the tops of the links in the chain.

  • Patent number: 4305488
Abstract: A vehicle accessory drive assembly incorporates a speed-increasing planetary gear set with an engine-driven carrier input. A flywheel output is engaged with the ring gear through an overrunning clutch. A shiftable power train couples the output side of the vehicle transmission with the sun gear so that normally the output speed range is compressed relative to the input speed range. Accessory speeds are increased when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is running at idle. Changing accessory torque demands are satisfied smoothly. Upon application of the vehicle braking system, the power train is shifted so that the flywheel overruns the ring gear. Some of the energy which would be lost in the braking effort or during engine deceleration is absorbed by the flywheel, and is used to help drive the accessories.

  • Patent number: 4295798
Abstract: An automatic two-speed pump assembly for use with a diesel engine. The assembly includes a transmission capable of driving an associated fuel pump in high- and low-speed ranges, and a fluid control device responsive to pump pressure for shifting the transmission to its low-speed range at a pump pressure corresponding to an engine speed between crank and idle speeds. The fluid control device is responsive to pump pressure for shifting the transmission to its high-speed range at a pump pressure corresponding to an engine speed below crank speed.

  • Patent number: 4246996
Abstract: A remotely operable drive coupling for selectively engaging and disengaging a driving shaft and a driven shaft operable in accordance with the direction of shaft rotation. The coupling comprises a splined axially movable member connected to the driven shaft and having a screw-threaded bore, and a screw-threaded terminal part on the driving shaft adapted to be threadably received in the threaded bore when the driving shaft is rotated in one direction and the axially movable member is urged toward and in engagement with the terminal part of the driving shaft coupling the two members. Upon rotation of the driving shaft in the opposite direction, the parts become unscrewed and the axially movable part is resiliently urged away from the driving shaft uncoupling the members. The device can be controlled hydraulically, pneumatically or electrically.
