  • Patent number: 6598589
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the amount of fuel used in combustion during open-loop run mode of a internal combustion engine. A lookup table calibrated to a fuel with a low driveability index is used to make a fueling decision for open-loop run mode. Then, at least one of the following indicators of fuel problems is monitored: the engine misfire detection system, the engine speed and the manifold absolute pressure. If any of these indicators detect a problem with the amount of fuel the engine is receiving, a fuel increase is calculated and implemented in one or more steps. A problem is indicated if an engine misfire is detected, the engine speed drops below a predetermined threshold value, or the manifold absolute pressure rises above a predetermined threshold value. The fuel increase is limited by a calculation based upon a fuel with a high driveability index.

  • Patent number: 4601196
Abstract: An engine mounted combustion chamber pressure sensor is arranged with a body mounted in an external wall, such as of the cylinder head, and a probe engaging a combustion chamber defining wall to provide direct indication of combustion pressure caused movements of the chamber defining wall with respect to the external wall, thus providing direct combustion pressure signals usable for indicating or control purposes.

  • Patent number: 4408722
Abstract: A fuel injection nozzle of the outward opening poppet valve type includes a closure member reciprocable in the axial bore of a spray tip so as to control fuel flow therefrom and to form therewith an annular discharge spray orifice. The closure member includes a valve head with a pintle extending therefrom, the pintle having an annular groove therein that is located relative to the free end of the pintle so that during opening movement of the closure member this groove will not extend outward from the spray tip. The groove as thus located is operative to effect turbulent flow of the fuel being discharged and to act as a thermal barrier and is thus operative to substantially eliminate carbon build-up in the injection nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4270499
Abstract: A precombustion type diesel engine having a modified and improved flame cup and precombustion chamber arrangement wherein a single side-opening passage in the floor of the flame cup is provided with dual throats connecting with the prechamber. The primary opening or throat controls swirl development during gas inflow to the prechamber while the secondary opening or throat allows early discharge of initial combustion products to the main combustion chamber for improved secondary mixing and reduced particulate emissions.
