  • Patent number: 5729682
Abstract: A method of sharing network applications in a peer-to-peer computer network environment without use of a centralized repository of network application data. According to the method, a data structure is stored at each of a plurality of computers in the computer network. The data structure contains information on network applications and associated network resources residing elsewhere in the network. In response to a user selection of a network application at a local computer, a connection status of the local computer is stored. The information in the local data structure is then used to establish connections between the local computer and at least one of the plurality of computers where the selected network application resides. The local computer communicates over the connections as required to thereby run the network application. After the network application executes, the local computer is disconnected from the connections and returned to its prior connection status.

  • Patent number: 4968914
Abstract: The electromechanical translation apparatus includes a translation drive assembly driven by front and rear piezoelectric clamping members coupled together with central extension piezoelectric members, which negotiate an elongated stationary channel. The translation drive assembly may directly carry an object for precise linear positioning in one dimension, or may carry a movable channel which in turn may be translated along an axis perpendicular to the direction of the stationary channel, so that an object placed upon the movable channel can be precisely positioned in two dimensions.

  • Patent number: 4952857
Abstract: The scanning micromechanical probe control system for controlling relative movement between a sensor probe and an adjacent sample surface includes a sensor probe for measuring a parameter which varies relative to the relative positioning of the probe and the adjacent surface adapted to generate an error signal indicating one of at least two discrete position conditions; an up/down counter for integrating the error signal and for generating an up/down count signal; and a position control servo for controlling the relative positioning of the probe and the surface responsive to the up/down count signal. An adaptive feedback control most preferably controls the rate of up/down positioning of the sensor probe and the rate of raster scanning of the probe relative to the target surface.

  • Patent number: 4750649
Abstract: A spout for a recovery boiler such as those used in the papermaking industry. As in prior art spouts of this type, the spout is provided with an internal cavity to thereby permit water cooling of the spout. By this invention, a duct is provided for the internal cavity, the duct applying a portion of the coolant liquid to specific areas of the spout which in the past have failed. Further, the radius of curvature of the lowermost portion of the spout is increased by a factor of two. The useful life of the spout of this invention is in excess of twenty five weeks, as compared to a prior art spout whose useful life is about two weeks.

  • Patent number: 4075085
Abstract: Oil-soluble nickel, cobalt, or copper-containing additives are blended with a hydrocarbon feedstock containing arsenic, and the resulting solution is heated to at least 300.degree. F to convert a large proportion of the arsenic to forms removable by conventional filtration or desalting techniques. Preferably, the feedstock-additive solution is heated to at least 500.degree. F and is then distilled so as to produce one or more distillate fractions consisting of components that boil at atmospheric pressure at temperatures in the range 400.degree.-900.degree. F; such distillate fractions will contain arsenic in a concentration less that 20% of that of the feedstock.

  • Patent number: 4040797
Abstract: Arsenic containing fuel compositions are disclosed that will, upon combustion, leave an ash that retains substantial proportions of said arsenic, thereby reducing its dissemination into the atmosphere. This result is obtained by adding to the fuel small amounts of a Mg, Ba, Zn, or Ni component. Also disclosed are certain fuel compositions containing both Mg and Zn additives that produce an ash containing arsenic in an essentially insoluble form.
