    Abstract: A mechanical face seal for application in high pressure sealing environments having a carbon sealing ring in sliding sealing contact with a sealing ring of dissimilar material. The carbon ring is supported on a rigid backing ring. A barrier is provided in overlying relation to the outer circumferential surface of the carbon ring to separate the outer circumferential surface from exposure to the pressure exerted by the sealed fluid.
