  • Patent number: 9727886
Abstract: A social networking system performs account recovery for a user with the help of the user's connections (e.g., friends). The social networking system selects connections of the user based on information indicating likelihood of real-world interactions between the user and the selected connections. Access codes are sent to the selected connections and the user instructed to obtain access codes from the selected connections via a communication that is outside the social networking system, for example, via phone. The user provides the access codes obtained from the selected connections to the social networking system. If the access codes provided by the user match the access codes sent to the selected connections, the user is granted access to the account. Real-world interactions between two users are determined based on sharing of devices between the users or information indicating presence of the users in the same place during same time interval.

  • Publication number: 20140317006
Abstract: Technology for providing reporting options specific for a market or a common user attribute is disclosed herein. A computer server of a social networking system determines multiple community standards for a group of users of a social networking system, wherein the group of users have a common user attribute such as a common market. The computer server receives a request for reporting a content object in the social networking system from a user among the group of users. The computer server determines multiple reporting options based on the community standards, and transmits the reporting options to the user in response to the request.

  • Publication number: 20140149887
Abstract: A social networking service initiates a custom resolution process when a receiving user indicates objection to a message posted by a posting user. In embodiments, the networking service provides interfaces to the receiving user to obtain information about the user's intended goal, and to elicit information from the user about the context of the user's objection. The networking service analyzes the received information to determine an emotional context associated with the objection. Based on the emotional context and also based on additional social context information associated with the two users, the networking service presents customized resolution options to the receiving user.

  • Patent number: 8010996
Abstract: A network device and method are directed towards providing a client side sign-in seal for use detecting phishing attempts. In one embodiment, a user of a client device may provide anti-phishing data through a sign-in setup user interface for a website, application, or the like. In one embodiment, the anti-phishing data is an image provided by the user. The user may also provide text, symbols, an audio clip, or the like. The user may also modify aspects of the image, text, symbols, or the like, such as a color. When the user accesses the website, application, or the like, the client device may provide client device data used to locate and display the sign-in seal. If the user is being phished, the anti-phishing data may not be displayed or otherwise played.

  • Publication number: 20100275250
Abstract: Embodiments are directed towards providing an aging of account data points usable in recovering access to an account. The aging functionality of account data points is configured to enable users who may have had access to their account compromised or otherwise denied, still be able to recover access. Account data points are time stamped when associated with an account. When a request is received to delete the account data point, the account data point is instead placed into an aging status for a time period. During the aging status time period, the account data point may still be used to recover access to the account. Moreover, after access is recovered using a certain account data point, any account data points created after the certain account data point may be deleted to minimize unauthorized access to the account.

  • Patent number: 7424617
Abstract: An electronic points system that allows consumers to redeem online those points that were earned offline is described. In one implementation, the offline-online points system is applied to a soft drink bottle caps program. A soft drink company is sponsoring a promotions program where certain bottle caps are worth so many points. A consumer buys a soft drink bottle at a local store. The lucky consumer discovers that he is the beneficiary of a winning bottle cap, and in particular, a bottle cap that is worth N points. Instead of redeeming this winning bottle cap in the traditional way, the consumer logs onto the soft drink company's website and registers his bottle cap code. Thereafter, after registration, the consumer can redeem these points for any merchandise that is available for purchase with these points at any participating company's online store.

  • Publication number: 20080034428
Abstract: A network device and method are directed towards providing a client side identification mechanism for use detecting phishing attempts. In one embodiment, a user of a client device may provide anti-phishing data through an anti-phish setup interface for a website, application, or the like. In one embodiment, the anti-phishing data is an image. The client device then receives client device data indicating the website, application, or the like, for which the anti-phishing data is associated and where the anti-phishing data is located. In one embodiment, the client device data is received in the form of a cookie. When the user of the client device accesses the website, application, or the like, the client device may provide the client device data which is then used to locate and display the anti-phishing data. If the user is being phished, the anti-phishing data may not be displayed or otherwise played.

  • Patent number: 5991779
Abstract: A process and system for distributed garbage collection in a distributed network includes transmission of a root request message tagged with a unique identifier from a suspect node to all nodes of the suspect node's inverse reference graph looking for a rooted (persistent) object. Objects respond to the root request message with an affirmative or disregard response (indicating a root or coupling to a root) tagged with the same identifier or that no relevant garbage collecting information is available from a particular branch. The suspect node, in the absence of any affirmative responses, is identified as obsolete (garbage) and may be collected. Other objects having the same identifier are identified and/or collected as garbage as well.
