Abstract: Disclosed is a system, method, and apparatus for calculating metrics by using hierarchical level metadata to describe the various structures within the database. The hierarchical level metadata permit calculation of complex metrics by an analytical server which would otherwise be difficult or impossible. As a result of the way that the analytical server calculates the metrics, slicing and drilling are supported. Additionally, dimension and fact level security are also supported.

Error recovery is provided by detecting an error with checking logic, turning off system clocks and invoking error recovery software, executing recovery software to recover from the error and set an action latch, turning on system clocks, taking hardware recovery action in response to the action latch, resetting the action latch and continue processing. A first service processor, under program control, drives the system control facilities to perform service functions for the data processing system. A second service processor, independently under program control, also drives the system control facilities to perform service functions for the data processing system. An arbitrating circuit cross-couples each system control facility to the respective service processors and arbitrates the transfer of data and control signals between each given system control facility and the given service function running on the given service processor which currently has possession and control of the given system control facility.
