Patent number: 5534684Abstract: A portable terminal unit of tablet configuration contains an optical reader for scanning two-dimensional information on a target area. The terminal unit has an optical window near an underside thereof and contains an optical reader having a given depth of field and field of view at a given range from the window. The apparatus includes a ranger for operably determining the range of the target area from the terminal unit and a controller for operably controling activation of the reader. The controller may be configured to permit activation of the reader as: the target area is spaced within a certain tolerance range about an optimal focal length from the reader; the target area is spaced within the depth of field of the reader and motion of the terminal unit relative to the target area is halted; or the target area is spaced within the depth of field of the reader and motion of the terminal unit relative to the target area is reversed.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Norand CorporationInventor: Arvin D. Patent number: 5530619Abstract: A portable, hand-held data collection terminal unit is of modular structure including among other modules a display screen module, a keyboard module and a base module, each of which may be chosen from a plurality of modules available for assembly into the terminal unit. Consequently, a wide combination of terminal units may be assembled from a comparatively limited number of modular choices, such that the cost of assembly of a terminal unit with specific functions may be minimized. A particular selected module is a scanning module including a pivotable scanning head to permit a user to adjust the scanning head to a convenient position for operating the scanning module without sacrifice of visual access to a display screen of the display screen module. The display screen module may be selected from modules of standard width equal to the width of the terminal unit, of extended width extending when assembled to a selected keyboard module beyond either or both lateral edges of the terminal unit.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1995Date of Patent: June 25, 1996Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Steven E. Patent number: 5488575Abstract: A portable data collection terminal has an elongate housing with a hand grip conforming rear surface. A front surface features a numerical keyboard adjacent a lower end of the housing and an LCD screen adjacent the keyboard toward an upper end of the housing. The display screen is of elongate rectangular shape, its length extending longitudinally of the housing of the data terminal. The active area of the display screen is covered by a touch sensitive overlay screen which is configured in one mode of operation of the data terminal into an alphabetical keyboard. The orientation of the display is switchable between orientations in which the line direction of the displayed data extends across or longitudinally of the data terminal. The keys of the numerical keyboard are identified by indicia disposed on a template. The orientation of the template may be sensed to switch the orientation of the displayed data and touch sensitive key identifiers to correspond to the orientation of the indicia on the template.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1994Date of Patent: January 30, 1996Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Arvin D. Patent number: 5410141Abstract: The disclosure relates to battery powered hand-held data entry terminals wherein a peripheral module may contain an automatically operating full image reader and a wireless communication unit. The reader reads at least one full line of indicia and may comprise a laser bar code scanner or a flash type image reader. Preferably the reader has uniform resolution in orthogonal directions in the field of view so that an area image can be read at any arbitrary angular orientation and re-oriented as a stored digital image to a normalized orientation before decoding. The user interface may lie in a first longitudinally extended layer and the peripheral module may lie in a second longitudinally extended adjoining layer. In normal reading disposition of the automatic reader, the user interface may be close to its normal orientation for user interaction therewith to provide for smooth transitions between reading and user interaction operations.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1992Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Assignee: NorandInventors: Steven E. Patent number: 4912309Abstract: A point of sale system as illustrated comprised of a terminal with input or output devices including a manual data input, a coded data input (e.g., bar code scanner and/or smart card reader), an on-line display, and a hard copy output. A primary processing module has ten expansion connectors such that the primary module can become any level of processor from powerful peripheral controller to a master processor with a large non-volatile database, such flexibility giving a point of sale terminal configuration advantages such as the following: (1) reduced cost in volume production because one common computing core is used to control different functions; (2) improved system redundancy since the primary processor unit can control localized peripherals at the bus level independently of a point of sale system network; and (3) improved system performance by (a) reducing the amount of peripheral network communication traffic, and (b) direct access to database information in small to medium size point of sale systems.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1988Date of Patent: March 27, 1990Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Arvin D. Patent number: 4877949Abstract: In the instant reading of bar codes by flash illumination, the disclosed system automatically adapts to bar code configurations of greater extent and/or curvature, for example by measuring distance to one or more points on the bar code and adjusting a lens barrel, and/or by selecting from multiple image paths through a lens system. Plural illumination sources may be used to enhance the uniformity of the reflected bar code image, may be flashed jointly and/or in rapid sequence, and may have flash durations individually adapted to respective segments of a bar code for optimum sensitivity and signal to noise ratio. One or a plurality of reflected light sensors may control integration time of a bar code image sensor, for example during sequential activation of plural illumination sources. Marker light beams may originate in the vicinity of the bar code image sensor and be projected through the optics to produce light spots on the bar code label precisely delineating the image sensor field of view.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1986Date of Patent: October 31, 1989Assignee: Norand CorporationInventors: Arvin D.
