  • Publication number: 20050187428
Abstract: An artificial sphincter comprises an anchoring element in form of a shape memory coil, which has a transition temperature, which is significantly higher than the human body temperature of about 37° C. At lease a portion of the cylindrical sphincter body is enclosed by the coil. The coil to be threaded onto threads provided at the exterior mantle face of the body. Also disclosed is a method for inserting and anchoring the sphincter in an urethra and a device for inserting and anchoring the sphincter which comprises a proximal end portion of about cylindrical shape, means for coupling with the sphincter disposed at the proximal end of said proximal end portion and being operable from a distal end portion thereof, a channel disposed within the proximal end portion which has an opening at the proximal end thereof for adducing an aqueous fluid of a temperature above 37° C. to the shape memory metal coil.
