Publication number: 20240151211Abstract: The disclosure relates to condition monitoring of wind turbine pitch bearings by measuring variations in distance between inner and outer rings of a pitch bearing during an angular rotation. Example embodiments include a method of monitoring a condition of a pitch bearing (100) of a wind turbine, the pitch bearing comprising a first ring (102) attached to a blade of the wind turbine and a second ring (103) attached to a hub of the wind turbine, the method comprising: mounting a displacement sensor (105) to the pitch bearing (100) to measure a distance between the first ring (102) and the second ring (103); rotating the first ring (102) relative to the second ring (103) over an angular range; and recording an angular position (204) of the first ring (102) relative to the second ring (103) and a distance (205a, 205b) measured by the displacement sensor (105) while rotating the first ring (103) relative to the second ring (103) over the angular range.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 10, 2022Publication date: May 9, 2024Inventors: Robin Neil Ronald Elliott, Ashley Crowther, Richard Smith, John Karl Coultate, Gareth Morris

Patent number: 11674552Abstract: A tensioning arrangement for a bearing ring, which introduces a compressive force towards a rotational centre of the bearing ring, to prevent the bearing ring distorting as a shaft supported by the bearing turns. The tensioner arrangement includes a strap and a tensioner. The strap has a connector at each end, and tensioner has an element for connecting to the connectors. The tensioner also has an element for applying tension to the strap. In use, the strap is arranged around the bearing ring and a circumferential length of the strap in contact with the bearing ring is reduced, thereby applying compressive force to the bearing ring.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2022Date of Patent: June 13, 2023Assignee: Insight Analytics Solutions Holdings LimitedInventors: Colin McNichols, Chad Phillip Glinsky, Ashley Crowther

Patent number: 10036424Abstract: A method is disclosed for replacing grease in a main bearing of a wind turbine, the main bearing located in a housing and the housing having least one cover plate. the bearing cover plate is removed from the housing, grease is manually removed from the main bearing, and a flushing cover is installed on the housing in place of the bearing cover plate. The flushing cover has at least two parts, the parts fitting around the main shaft, and each part having a seal so that when its attached to the bearing housing, the flushing cover forms a seal with the main shaft. The flushing cover has holes allowing access to the main bearing, and a solvent or oil is sprayed via one of the holes onto the main bearing to remove grease, the remaining holes being sealed by a removable plug. Solvent or oil is pumped out of the housing via a port at the bottom of the housing or flushing cover.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2015Date of Patent: July 31, 2018Assignee: INSIGHT ANALYTICS SOLUTIONS HOLDINGS LIMITEDInventors: Richard Smith, Ashley Crowther, Jesse Harris Graeter, Scott Macindoe, Michael Ulfert Homemann
