  • Patent number: 8113494
Abstract: Active cushioning mechanisms that detect imminent impact and activate a damper by driving power from an onboard power supply into an electromagnetic actuator. The electromagnetic actuator transforms the stored electric power into an electromechanical damping force. The actuators may be arranged about the exterior surface of the device, and may be selectively activated to provide protection at different points on the surface depending on the location of expected impact.

  • Patent number: 7874021
Abstract: This invention is directed to a glove system for operating an electronic device. The glove system may include an inner liner and an outer shell. The liner may be formed from any suitable material, including a material that is thin, electrically conductive, has low thermal conductivity, and/or has an “anti-sticky” finish. The outer shell may include at least one aperture through which the inner liner may extend to operate the input mechanism of an electronic device (e.g., on at least one finger tip). In some embodiments, the aperture may be at a finger tip of the outer shell. In some embodiments, a closing mechanism may be used to maintain the aperture closed when the user is not operating the electronic device. For example, an elastic ring may surround the aperture such that, in its non-deformed state, the aperture is substantially closed. The user may elastically deform the ring to allow the liner to pass through the outer shell.

  • Publication number: 20090166098
Abstract: This relates to electronic devices that include a multi-touch user interface component. More specifically, this relates to portable media devices that enable a user to listen to music, facilitate telephone conversations, send and receive electronic messages, and utilize a multi-touch input panel in an eyes-free manner. A user may use a multi-touch user input component to navigate a menu system absent a functioning display screen, virtual buttons or any other visual cues or prompts. Audio cues, portions of prerecorded songs, and any other type of audio information may help the user to mentally map and quickly navigate the device's menu system.

  • Publication number: 20090113005
Abstract: The present invention can permit a communications request initiator to control pre-communications interactions. For example, the present invention can permit a communications request initiator to instruct a recipient communications device to present specific information to a communications request recipient when the initiator sends the communications request to the recipient. The present invention also can permit a communications request initiator to control the information presented to the initiator when he is waiting for a communications request recipient to respond to the communications request.

  • Publication number: 20060269797
Abstract: An apparatus comprises a substrate, a soft underlayer on the substrate, an interlayer on the soft underlayer, a magnetic layer on the interlayer, wherein the magnetic layer has a granular structure comprising magnetic grains separated by non-magnetic grain boundaries, and an exchange enhancement layer formed on the surface of the granular magnetic layer.
