  • Publication number: 20190199735
Abstract: An electronic device includes a first media configured to store first data and first processing circuitry of the electronic device is configured to control operations of the first media by executing firmware instructions. The electronic device also includes a security device including second media configured to store second data and second processing circuitry configured to decrypt a firmware verification message received from a host device with the unique device key. The second processing circuitry generates an execution image in response to receiving the firmware verification message corresponding to the firmware instructions executed by the first processing circuitry and outputs a firmware verification reply to the host device including the generated execution image and/or representative value.

  • Patent number: 9933955
Abstract: Data from a host is received into a volatile memory of a Data Storage Device (DSD) for storage on a disk of the DSD. Data received in the volatile memory from the host is identified for inclusion in a Power Safe Write Buffer (PSWB) and an indication is sent to the host indicating storage of data received from the host and identified for inclusion in the PSWB before storing the identified data on the disk. In the event of an unexpected power loss of the DSD, the identified data is transferred from the volatile memory to a Non-Volatile Solid-State Memory (NVSM) of the DSD.

  • Patent number: 9870281
Abstract: A Data Storage Device (DSD) includes a disk for storing data, a volatile memory for temporarily storing data to be written on the disk, and a Non-Volatile Solid-State Memory (NVSM) for storing data. Data is stored in the volatile memory in preparation for writing the data on the disk. The data is written from the volatile memory onto the disk, and it is determined whether the data written on the disk is qualified as written. In the event of an unexpected power loss, a portion of unqualified data that has not been qualified as written is transferred from the volatile memory to the NVSM.

  • Patent number: 9236086
Abstract: Systems and methods for reducing operational latency of data storage systems are disclosed. More particularly, a data storage device can perform conditioning operations on inactive zones while the data storage device is idle. When an active zone is the target of a write command, the data storage device can exchange a conditioned inactive zone for the unconditioned target zone. The write operation can be performed immediately on the previously-inactive already-conditioned zone. At a later time, the target zone can be conditioned.

  • Patent number: 9164694
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a data storage device comprising data storage media comprising a plurality of data sectors and control circuitry programmed to: receive a command from a host to cryptographically erase at least a portion of data stored on the data storage media; execute a cryptographic erase; receive a read command from the host to read a data sector in the data storage media; determine if the data sector has been cryptographically erased; and return configurable return data to the host in response to determining that the data sector has been cryptographically erased.

  • Patent number: 8788880
Abstract: A data storage subsystem is disclosed that implements a solid-state data buffering scheme. Prior to completion of programming in solid-state storage media, data that is formatted for storage in solid-state media is maintained in one or more buffers. The system is able to retry failed programming operations directly from the buffers, rather than reprocessing the data. The relevant programming pipeline may therefore be preserved by skipping over a failed write operation and reprocessing the data at the end of the current pipeline processing cycle.
