Abstract: Concepts described herein described herein relate to the determination of media that is presented to indicia readers for digital reading of said indicia. In some cases, embodiments described herein rely on operating an imaging reader in a particular mode of operation where image frames are captured with the intensity of the illumination light varying during said capture and subsequently determining, by analyzing those frame, a media type appearing within the FOV based on one of (i) a lack of an optical signature associated with varying the intensity of the illumination light during the capture of the frame or (ii) a presence of the optical signature associated with the varying the intensity of the illumination light during the capture of the frame.

Abstract: An indicia reading system and associated methods discriminate between types of media upon which encoded indicia is rendered. Encoded indicia rendered upon a medium are imaged using different sets of image acquisition parameter settings. An attempt to decode the encoded indicia that are imaged is made and the image acquisition parameter settings corresponding to successfully decoding the encoded indicia are identified. A type of the medium upon which the encoded indicia is rendered is determined based on which of the sets of image acquisition parameter settings correspond to the encoded indicia being successfully decoded.

Abstract: A patient unique identifier system is provided. An example system includes a database storing patient information; a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag associated with a patient, the RFID tag storing an indication of an identification of the patient and encrypted biometric data captured by sensors of a wearable device worn by the patient; and an RFID reader device configured to: read the RFID tag and retrieve, based on reading the RFID tag, the indication of the identification of the patient and the encrypted biometric data without decrypting the encrypted biometric data; send the encrypted biometric data to a server to be decrypted and stored in the database; access patient information associated with stored in the database based on the retrieved indication of the identification of the patient; and provide the information associated with the patient to a user of the RFID reader device.
