Patent number: 11746975Abstract: A lighting system and a method of operating a lighting module are described. The lighting module includes a heat sink a first LED element mounted on the heat sink emits light as a low beam pattern. A second LED element mounted on the heat sink emits light as a high beam pattern. A driver circuit electrically connected to the first and second LED elements to selectively supply electrical power for operation. The driver circuit is disposed to operate in a first and a second mode. In the first mode, to provide a low beam illumination, the first LED element is operated in a high power state while the second LED element is turned off. In the second mode, to provide a high beam illumination, the second LED element is operated in a high power state, while the first LED element is operated in a dimmed state.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2019Date of Patent: September 5, 2023Assignee: LUMILEDS LLCInventors: Jürgen Mertens, Harry Gijsbers, Astrid Marchewka, Benno Spinger

Patent number: 10996450Abstract: The invention relates to an optical device and to a headlighting assembly including an optical device. An optical device includes a body of a transparent material arranged to receive light at at least one light input portion. At least a portion of the light is reflected at an outer surface of the body due to total internal reflection. A non-transparent housing is provided to at least partially cover the body. The body is held within the housing by protrusions arranged to abut against the outer surface.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2017Date of Patent: May 4, 2021Assignee: LUMILEDS LLCInventors: Juergen Mertens, Astrid Marchewka, Georg Henninger

Patent number: 10670256Abstract: A lighting module comprises a heat sink with a body portion and a protrusion portion protruding from the body portion into a forward direction. An LED element is mounted on a mounting surface of the protrusion portion. The mounting surface is arranged facing partially backwards and forming an angle of 5-45° to the forward direction. An electrical plug connector is provided within the body portion's cavity and is electrically connected to the LED element. In the lighting system, a reflector assembly comprises a concave reflector with an inner reflector space. A lighting module is arranged such that its protrusion portion projects into the inner reflector space. Light emitted from the LED element is reflected by the reflector. The body portion is arranged outside of the reflector space. The lighting module may be replaced by separating the lighting module from the reflector assembly and providing a new lighting module.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 2019Date of Patent: June 2, 2020Assignee: Lumileds Holding B.V.Inventors: Jürgen Mertens, Harry Gijsbers, Astrid Marchewka, Benno Spinger

Patent number: 10260705Abstract: An LED module combines a heat sink portion and an LED arrangement. The heat sink portion is a first part of a multiple part heat sink having at least this first part and a second part. The heat sink portion is not sufficient alone to provide the required cooling for the operation of the LED arrangement so it can be small and low cost. A user can simply replace the LED module as a single unit, without the significant waste and cost of disposing of the full heat sink.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2016Date of Patent: April 16, 2019Assignee: KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS N.V.Inventors: Jürgen Gerhard Mertens, Astrid Marchewka, Ralph Hubert Peters, Benno Spinger, Georg Friedrich Alfons Henninger

Publication number: 20170248288Abstract: The present invention relates to a LED device at least comprising a LED module with one or several LEDs mounted on a carrier, a heat sink or heat spreader and a thermal interface between the carrier and the heat sink. The carrier is thermally connected via the thermal interface to the heat sink. The thermal interface is formed of a member of a heat-conducting material, which is ductile at least during assembling of the device and allows to arrange the heat sink in orientation and position substantially independent from the carrier. The proposed LED device allows for flexible design solutions of the thermal components as well as the overall design, e. g. for applications in automotive lighting.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2015Publication date: August 31, 2017Inventors: Rob Bastiaan Maria Einig, Astrid Marchewka, Nils Benter
