    Abstract: Provided here are complexes useful in the detection of aromatic alpha-amino acids and peptides incorporating aromatic alpha-amino acids, and methods for detecting aromatic alpha-amino acids and peptides incorporating aromatic alpha-amino acids. Accordingly, provided herein are complexes comprising a compound of Formula I: and an aromatic alpha-amino acid, a peptide incorporating an aromatic alpha-amino acid, or a salt or ester of any of the foregoing. Also, provided herein are methods for detecting an aromatic alpha-amino acid, a peptide incorporating an aromatic alpha-amino acid, or a salt or ester of any of the foregoing, by using the fluorescence intensity enhancement, or the hypochromic shift, of the compound of Formula I.
