    Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method for inducing apoptosis of cancer cells, which comprises administering an effective amount of a 2-nitroimidazole derivative represented by the general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group substituted by 1 to 3 hydroxyl groups, and a method for treating a cancer, which comprises using the method for inducing apoptosis in combination with another means for killing cancer cells.
