    Abstract: A method for providing assisted ventilation which avoids hypoxia and hypocapnia is disclosed, in which a predetermined dead space in an assisted ventilation system is provided external to the patient. The method may also be used to create normocapnia or moderate hypercapnia without causing hypoxia during assisted ventilation. Preferably, hypoxia can be avoided while inducing and/or maintaining the arterial carbon dioxide tension between about 35 and 95 mmHg. Dead space volumes as small as 10 ml and exceeding 150 ml are utilized in the method. An improved proximal terminal, tubular attachments, and coaxial filter are disclosed, which are safer and less expensive to use than prior art unilimb assisted ventilation systems; the devices of the present invention also reduce medical wastes in comparison to prior art assisted ventilation systems.

    Abstract: A purine compound, which has a desired and an undesired effect when a dosage sufficient to induce the desired effect is administered to a mammal, is combined with a counteracting agent, wherein the counteracting agent can reduce the undesired effect when the combination containing an effective amount of the purine compound is administered to a mammal. In a preferred embodiment, an adenosine compound is combined in vitro with a catecholamine in a predetermined ratio to form an adenosine composition. Very high dosages of a purine compound, such as adenosine, ATP or their analogs can be administered to a mammal via administration of compositions containing the purine compound and a counteracting agent, while reducing the dangerous, undesired effects associated with administering the same dosage of purine compound without first combining it with the counteracting agent. New catecholamine compositions are also taught.

    Abstract: This application discloses a unilimb device of universal application to different types of breathing systems. The device comprises two gas carrying tubes, one within the other, the corresponding ends of the tubes being within two common terminal elements. One of the terminal elements provides for two separate passages, each being connectable, one to a source of gas, and the other for disposition of the expiratory gases. The other terminal element includes a nozzle end for connection to the inlet for the patient's respiratory system, with the opposite end serving to receive the other ends of the two flexible tubes and to provide short passages to the nozzle to minimize dead air space. Provision may be made for telescoping each terminal element, and the inlet element may be provided with a member for extending or adapting it to different breathing systems.
