Patent number: 7925846Abstract: A processor of a management computer acquires the free disk space amount of a disk pool, acquires the invalid disk space amount from a plurality of host computers, determines a host computer to which the instruction for the physical disk space collection is issued on the basis of the invalid disk space amount, and judges that the free disk space amount is smaller than a predetermined threshold value before transmitting a GC control request to the determined host computer; another processor generates and transmits invalid disk space position information indicating the position of the invalid disk space in a virtual volume in cases where a host investigation request is received; and the other processor collects the physical disk space of a physical disk allocated to the storage disk space of the virtual volume in the disk pool.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2008Date of Patent: April 12, 2011Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventor: Atsushi Ebata

Patent number: 7827368Abstract: A system according to this invention converts a full-copy snapshot into a differential snapshot. The system is composed of a storage subsystem and a server subsystem. The storage subsystem comprises a disk drive and a disk controller. The server subsystem comprises an interface, a processor, and a memory. The disk controller provides storage areas of the disk drive as logical volumes, and stores a differential block bitmap. The processor obtains the differential block bitmap, and identifies a block from the differential block bitmap. The processor obtains, from a full-copy snapshot volume, differential data that is stored in the identified block. The processor stores the obtained differential data in a differential volume. The processor stores, in differential block arrangement information, the location of the differential data stored in the differential volume.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2008Date of Patent: November 2, 2010Assignee: Hitachi, LtdInventor: Atsushi Ebata

Patent number: 7680847Abstract: A method for moving files between network storages in a virtualized network storage system having multiple network storages and rebalancing the free disk spaces. It periodically judges whether to start rebalancing. Two different conditions are adopted for the determination of start: (a) an imbalance of free disk spaces and the minimum value of the free disk spaces is less than a threshold and (b) an imbalance of free disk spaces and the frequency of accesses to the system is less than a threshold. Rebalancing is performed until the difference in free disk spaces falls below the threshold without exceeding the maximum execution time of rebalancing. If a request to write into a file which is being moved from a client takes place during a file moving step, the movement of the file is aborted and the file is deleted from the destination.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 2006Date of Patent: March 16, 2010Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Atsushi Ebata, Shinichi Kawamoto, Jun Okitsu, Yoshiko Yasuda

Patent number: 7606871Abstract: A virtualizing file system view method for virtualizing one or more network storage devices into a virtualized file system view network storage system wherein destination network storage information of stored files is compactly held regardless of the number of files, and files are separated into one or more file groups and the file groups managed in destination network storage units. Until now, managing network storage unit information in individual files was necessary however the virtualizing file system view method reduces the management information that must be held and efficiently utilizes network storage capacity without holding destination network storage information in individual files. The cost of rewriting information is also lowered during structural changes such as adding or deleting network storage units since storage destination network information can be rewritten in file groups.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2003Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Shinichi Kawamoto, Atsushi Ebata, Jun Okitsu, Yoshiko Yasuda, Tatsuo Higuchi

Patent number: 7437603Abstract: Provided is a technique which solves a problem of a long-time reduction in a service level after service restoration and a problem of a failure caused by a disk capacity shortage during primary volume restoration. According to the technique, reference is made to a differential block management unit (217) setting which of a differential volume (142) and a primary volume (141) a data block of a restoring source snapshot volume (VVOL No. 3) is to determine which of the primary volume (141) and the differential volume (142) a volume storing read data is. When a restoring target data block is in a differential volume (142), data of the differential volume (142) is restored in the primary volume (141). Upon accessing to the primary volume (141) while restoring, switching is made to a virtual primary volume after restoration where data of the primary and differential volumes are combined based on the snapshot volume (VVOL No. 3) to execute accessing.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2006Date of Patent: October 14, 2008Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Atsushi Ebata, Atsushi Sutoh
