    Abstract: A tooth of a subject is irradiated with light having a specific polarization direction, and each of two or more polarization components in Raman-scattered light from the tooth is separated by a polarization separation element and detected by a detector. Polarization anisotropy of the Raman-scattered light is obtained from a detection signal of each polarization component, and dental caries in the tooth is detected based on the polarization anisotropy.
