Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring soil compaction using a compaction machine which applies periodic impact blows to the soil surface. The apparatus comprising a rotatable, multi-sided compactor mass that applies periodic impact blows to the soil surface when rolled over that surface. Data related to the level of compaction of the soil surface is derived, during compaction of the soil surface, from the deceleration of the compactor mass as it impacts the soil surface. This is achieved using one or more accelerometers mounted on the impact compactor.

Abstract: A soil compactor comprises a non-circular tamping roller the axis of which performs a translatory oscillating motion during operation, mounted through a pneumatic suspension system to a draw frame. The springing characteristics of the suspension system are selected so that, in combination with the mass of the frame and the frequency of oscillation of the roller axis, the frame is substantially isolated from the vertical component of the oscillatory motion at a chosen speed.

Abstract: A compactor which comprises a wheeled frame including a pair of laterally spaced ground wheels and a pair of laterally spaced links pivotally mounted on the frame about a common laterally extending pivot axis. A roller of non-circular cross-sectional profile is rotatably connected to the links about a laterally extending rotational axis spaced from the pivot axis. The roller is disposed between the wheels and is movable between an operative position in which it rests on and can roll along a surface supporting the wheels, and an inoperative position in which it is raised from the said surface and supported by the frame. Elevator means is provided on the frame and engageable with the roller whereby the roller is movable between its operative and inoperative positions.
