  • Patent number: 8907005
Abstract: The present invention provides emulsion copolymers and coating compositions containing the same having improved room temperature and hot block resistance in coatings wherein the copolymers have a broad measured glass transition temperature and are the copolymerization product of a vinyl monomer composition A and a softer vinyl monomer composition B having a Hansch parameter of at least 3.2, and containing one or more vinyl monomer M, such that each of which vinyl monomer(s) M would when homopolymerized provide a homopolymer having a measured Tg of 20° C. or less, such as, for example, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate. In addition, the present invention provides methods for making the emulsion copolymers by a powerfeed process comprising feeding vinyl monomer composition A into a reactor from a feed vessel while feeding, simultaneously or after a delay, vinyl monomer composition B into the feed vessel while polymerizing the monomers in the reactor.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 8, 2013
Date of Patent: December 9, 2014
    Assignee: Rohm and Haas Company
Inventors: Gary W. Dombrowski, Arnold S. Brownell, Aurelia de la Cuesta Sheppard, Thomas R. Tepe

  • Publication number: 20040063831
Abstract: A composition and method for controlling the attachment and growth of microbial species on the surface of a coating consisting of adding to the coating formulation a polymeric nanoparticle, which has a mean particle diameter of from 1 to 50 nm, linked to a bioactive molecule. The bioactive molecule is linked to the polymeric nanoparticle via either covalent or ionic bonds. The bioactive molecule may either cleave off from the polymeric nanoparticle to become the biologically active molecule or it may remain linked to the polymeric nanoparticle, thus making the polymeric/bioactive molecule the biologically active entity.

  • Patent number: 6485786
Abstract: An aqueous stain-blocking coating composition including an aqueous emulsion copolymer having a glass transition temperature (Tg) from −20° C. to 60° C. and including, as polymerized units, at least one ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer and 1.5-6%, by weight based on the dry weight of the copolymer, ethylenically unsaturated strong acid monomer, such as a Phosphorous-containing strong acid monomer, or salts thereof is provided. Also provided is a method for blocking stains by applying the aqueous stain-blocking coating composition to a substrate bearing a stain; and drying, or allowing to dry, the aqueous composition.
