Abstract: A building has a pair of structural elements with a member connecting these structural elements; the member has a slip joint with surfaces exhibiting substantial frictional characteristics and stable hysteretic behavior. The slip joint includes clamping means forcing said surfaces together to define a slippage interface for relative motion between the surfaces upon the application of a force tending to induce such motion of a large magnitude typically experienced during an earthquake.
