  • Publication number: 20070221095
Abstract: An asphalt-based nanocomposite useful as a coating for various applications including building materials products, such as shingles, is provided. The asphalt-based nanocomposites are particle-filled matrices that include an asphalt flux or derivate thereof and a layered clay mineral in an amount ranging from about 1 to about 15 weight %. Coated articles such as shingles including the asphalt-based nanocomposite are also disclosed as well as various methods of preparing the asphalt-based nanocomposite.

  • Publication number: 20070166499
Abstract: A method for preparing a roofing membrane, and a membrane, having significantly less adhesive while retaining the same sealing properties. The reduction in the amount of adhesive significantly decreases the cost of raw materials needed for manufacturing the membrane and thus reduces the overall cost of the membrane itself.

  • Publication number: 20060286347
Abstract: A building materials composite is provided, having a first perforated coated scrim, a second perforated coated scrim, and a breathable thermoplastic film bonded to and sandwiched between the first and the second perforated coated scrims. Further, a method of manufacturing a building materials composite is provided, the method having the steps of coating a fabric, perforating the coated fabric to make a perforated coated scrim, bonding one side of the perforated coated scrim to one side of a breathable thermoplastic film, and bonding a non-woven fabric to a second side of the breathable thermoplastic film.

  • Publication number: 20050252141
Abstract: A roofing shingle and a method of manufacturing a roofing shingle wherein the bottom surface of said shingle is provided with a release coating of a continuous film of particles having poor interlaminar strength due to the particles having good to perfect basal cleavage. The release coating significantly eases separation of roofing shingles that stick together when stacked during storage and transit in warm environments.

  • Publication number: 20050193673
Abstract: The present invention provides a roof shingle comprising a shingle with at least one layer having a head lap and a butt, the head lap including at least one alignment notch and the butt including at least one corner that corresponds to the alignment notch. Also, the present invention provides a roofing shingle comprising at least one layer formed from a cutting cylinder having a circumference that is a fraction of said roofing shingle length. The present invention also provides a method for manufacturing the inventive shingles and a method for installing the inventive shingles upon a roofing area.

  • Publication number: 20050130519
Abstract: An impact resistant roofing shingle which includes an asphalt coated substrate whose unexposed surface is laminated to an organic film. A process of forming that shingle includes the step of applying an organic film, by spraying a latex, by applying a rubber polymer modified asphalt, by compressing a plastic film having a higher melting or decomposition temperature than the melting point of the asphalt coating or by applying an adhesive to which a plastic film is applied to the unexposed surface of the asphalt coated substrate.

  • Publication number: 20050097857
Abstract: A non-asphaltic roofing underlayment that is breathable, water resistant and skid-resistant is disclosed. The non-asphaltic roofing underlayment includes a woven or non-woven substrate in which at least one surface thereof includes a breathable thermoplastic film disposed thereon. The breathable thermoplastic film imparts water-resistant to the substrate as well as maintains the breathability of the substrate.
