    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a battery management system for monitoring and regulating the operation of a rechargeable battery that has a plurality of electrically interconnected battery modules, each of which comprises at least one battery cell. The battery management system comprises a controller unit and a cell monitoring unit. The cell monitoring unit is designed to receive data relating to an operating parameter of a battery cell, to detect the received data, and to transmit the detected data to the controller unit. Furthermore, the cell monitoring unit is designed to detect at least one fault event with respect to the battery cell and to trigger a deactivation of the battery module comprising the battery cell. The disclosure further relates to a battery system with a plurality of electrically interconnected battery modules, each of which comprises at least one battery cell, and with a battery management system according to the disclosure.
