The synthetic representation of values comprises a plurality of elements, each elements corresponding to a plurality of values of the variable for a plurality of objects. The invention comprises receiving from a user a selection of an element of the synthetic representation, and selecting the corresponding plurality of objects. The type of synthetic representation being dependent upon the type of variable, the invention allows the user to easily and intuitively select objects interest him/her.
