    Abstract: An apparatus for actuating of fluids in a biosensor cartridge, the apparatus includes a microfluidic device, the microfluidic device includes a microfluidic circuit comprising at least a reservoir configured to contain at least a fluid and an active flow component in fluidic communication with the at least a reservoir, wherein the active flow component comprises a barrel and a plunger at a first position within the barrel, and an actuator configured to initiate an active flow process, wherein initiating the active flow process comprises accepting the plunger using a mechanical interface mechanically communicated to the actuator and moving the plunger within the barrel from the first position to a second position based on predetermined flow properties, and flow the at least a fluid unidirectionally as a function of the active flow process.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein are automated biosensing devices for biosensing including a set of sensor units organized in an array. Each of the sensor units includes an optical reader optically coupled to a corresponding sensor photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Each sensor PIC includes one or more optical analyte sensors each functionalized by a respective layer of binding ligands. Each optical reader is configured to provide optical signals to the one or more optical analyte sensors of the corresponding sensor PIC. An automated biosensing device can further include a robotic dipping head configured to dip each of the sensor PICs into a respective test sample.

When the first photonic integrated subcircuit (4706) is aligned to the second photonic integrated subcircuit (4708), a first light path of the first photonic integrated subcircuit (4706) can be optically coupled to a second light path of the second photonic integrated subcircuit (4708).

    Abstract: The Anti-idling System for Ambulances and Other Vehicles is a novel system for making electricity available to vehicles which idle curbside in urban and suburban environments. The invention comprises a pedestal with a specialized electricity plug, a cord and cord reel, an onboard microcontroller with GSM and RFID card reader which controls the flow of electricity and communicates with a cloud-based management system, and a cloud-based management system which controls user authentication. This enables an ambulance or other vehicle operator to approach the pedestal, access the plug and cord and turn on the flow of electricity using an RFID card or mobile phone, and use the pedestal to power their vehicle while in proximity to the pedestal. When the vehicle engine is started, the system detects the auto-ejection of the plug from the vehicle, turns off the flow of electricity, and automatically retracts the plug and cord into the pedestal.
