  • Patent number: 8074717
Abstract: A method for drilling a well with a drilling apparatus comprising a drill string and a bit, comprising attaching a cleaning tool comprising a coaxial pipe and at least one vortex spinner to a portion of the drill string above the bit, inserting the drill string into a wellbore, extending the wellbore while simultaneously pumping fluid through the cleaning tool to create a fluid flow, and loosening debris attached to the wellbore.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 1, 2007
Date of Patent: December 13, 2011
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company

  • Publication number: 20100000738
Abstract: A method for cleaning debris from a wellbore having a top and a bottom comprising inserting cleaning tool comprising a coaxial pipe in the wellbore, pumping fluid through the cleaning tool to create a fluid flow in a direction towards the bottom of the wellbore, converting the fluid flow into rotary mechanical power, agitating the debris by cavitation with at least one vortex spinner having a plurality of spinner blades, and allowing the debris to flow towards the top of the wellbore thereby cleaning the wellbore.

  • Patent number: 7040169
Abstract: A method is disclosed for predicting attenuation in real time while drilling using a portable continuous wave technology (CWT) tool to obtain amplitude spectra as a function of frequency for the cuttings at the rig site. Attenuation is predicted, and plotted as a function of frequency to monitor hydrocarbon content changes, fluid front moves, and pressure mapping or plotting attenuation as a function of depth to calibrate high resolution seismic data and interpret amplitudes for formation permeability determination.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 2002
Date of Patent: May 9, 2006
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Azra Nur Tutuncu, Michael Tolbert Myers, Mohammad Michael Arasteh
  • Patent number: 6968274
Abstract: Disclosed is a new method for providing accurate real time predictions of pore pressure and fracture gradient, at the rig site by determining the wave velocity from drill cuttings by a portable continuous wave technology (CWT) tool that measures drill cuttings at high resonant frequency and then using the velocity obtained in combination with the novel method of the present invention to arrive at accurate predictions for pore pressure and fracture gradient. The new technique offers real time pore pressure prediction at the rig site with small error margin that is not otherwise available using seismic, VSP, or check shot velocities in exploration.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 2002
Date of Patent: November 22, 2005
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
Inventors: Azra Nur Tutuncu, Michael Tolbert Myers, Mohammad Michael Arasteh
  • Patent number: 6845818
Abstract: Disclosed is an auxiliary method for freeing a drill pipe stuck due to build up of filter cake, which provides a reduction in the amount of force required to free said pipe which comprises: a) Lowering an ultrasonic horn type device down the drill pipe to the point of contact between said drill pipe and mud filter cake; b) Producing ultrasonic energy at the point of contact until the contact area is sufficiently reduced such that substantially less force is required to free the pipe.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 29, 2003
Date of Patent: January 25, 2005
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
