  • Patent number: 5979461
Abstract: Hydromagnesite-magnesium hydroxide compositions which, when used as fillers in smoking article wrappers, significantly reduce the amount of sidestream smoke produced by the burning smoking article while providing the smoking article with good subjective characteristics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 24, 1997
Date of Patent: November 9, 1999
    Assignee: Philip Morris Inc.
Inventors: Azzedine Bensalem, Warren Chang, Jay A Fournier, Andrew G. Kallianos, John B. Paine, III, Kenneth F. Podraza, Donald M. Schleich, Jeffrey I. Seeman

  • Patent number: 5595577
Abstract: A carbonaceous heat source comprising metal oxides and methods for making such heat source are provided. The heat source has an ignition temperature substantially lower than conventional carbonaceous heat sources, while at the same time produces virtually no carbon monoxide upon combustion. The heat source is prepared by pre-forming the carbon and binder materials into a desired shape, and then treating the shape with a sol containing metal oxide precursors. The metal oxide precursors are deposited in the pre-formed carbon shape. Further treatment converts the deposited metal oxide precursors into metal oxide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 19, 1995
Date of Patent: January 21, 1997
Inventors: Azzedine Bensalem, Sarojini Deevi, Seetharama C. Deevi, Donald M. Schleich
