  • Patent number: 8469695
Abstract: A mold core includes a forming pin having a hollow interior and an end wall. A passage, preferably in the form of a hollow tube, extends into the hollow interior of the forming pin and has an end sealingly secured at a position spaced from the end wall of the forming pin. A poppet valve is disposed on the end wall of the forming pin. The poppet valve is responsive to air pressure within the passage to open and permit flow of air through the end wall of the forming pin to assist stripping of molded articles from the mold core. The poppet valve includes a valve element having an outer end at the end face of the forming pin and an inner end adjacent to the end of the passage. A spring preferably biases the valve element to a closed position. The spring preferably comprises a coil spring captured in compression between the valve element and the forming pin.

  • Patent number: 7628601
Abstract: A machine for compression molding plastic articles includes a turret constructed for rotation around a vertical axis. A first array of compression molds and a second array of compression molds are mounted on the turret for movement through respective first and second mold paths as the turret rotates around the vertical turret axis. A first mold charge placement mechanism is disposed adjacent to the first path for placing mold charges into molds of the first array in sequence as the turret rotates. A second mold charge placement mechanism is disposed adjacent to the second path for placing mold charges into molds of the second array in sequence as the turret rotates and independently of the first mechanism. • Patent number: 7481646
Abstract: A machine for compression molding plastic articles includes an array of compression molds mounted on a support for movement through a defined mold path. A cam is disposed adjacent to the support to engage the molds in sequence and move at least one segment of each mold between open and closed positions. The cam has a first portion for opening the molds, a second portion for closing the molds in sequence and a pivot mounting the second cam portion to the first cam portion. A latch holds the second cam portion in a first position for closing the molds in sequence, and is responsive to excess force on the second cam portion to release said second cam portion to pivot to a second position spaced from the path.

  • Patent number: 7429170
Abstract: A compression molding machine, for compression molding a closure shell having a base wall with an opening and in accordance with one aspect of the disclosure, includes a male mold section and a female mold section having associated surfaces that oppose each other to form a cavity for compression molding the base wall of the closure shell. An annular bead on one of these surfaces cooperates with the opposing other surface to compression mold a disk connected to the base wall by a thin frangible web. The disk and the shell are stripped separately from the mold so that the shell emerges from the machine with the opening formed in the shell base wall by removal of the disk within the machine.

  • Patent number: 7357631
Abstract: An apparatus for placing mold charges into a mold of a compression molding machine includes at least one mold charge pick-up cup for receiving a severed charge of molten plastic, a vacuum source for applying a vacuum to the pick-up cup to retain the mold charge in the cup, and a source of gas (such as air) under pressure for periodically applying gas to the cup to release the mold charge from the cup. In one exemplary embodiment, the vacuum source applies a continuous vacuum to the cup, and the source of gas under pressure periodically applies gas to the cup to overcome the continuous vacuum at the cup. In another exemplary embodiment, vacuum and gas under pressure, are alternately applied to the cup. The vacuum source preferably includes a vacuum generator coupled to the source of gas under pressure for generating the vacuum to be applied to the cup. The vacuum source preferably includes a vacuum pump coupled to the source of gas under pressure for generating the vacuum to be applied to the cup.

  • Patent number: 5811044
Abstract: A method for severing gobs of melt extrudate, transporting and placing the gobs in molds for compression molding which includes providing an extrudate from an orifice, providing a plurality of C-shaped nests, continuously moving the C-shaped nests in a path past an orifice to sever a gob from the extrudate being extruded and transporting the gob along the path to a position for delivery to a plurality of tooling moved in succession past a delivery station, and applying a force to the gob axially of each nest to deliver a respective pellet to the tooling. An apparatus is provided for severing gobs from a melt extrudate, transporting the gobs, and delivery the gobs comprising a base and a disk having an axis of rotation supported on the base for rotation about the axis. A plurality of transfer nests are mounted on the disk in circumferentially spaced relation. Each transfer nest has a generally semi-cylindrical inner surface extending about a 180.degree. and has an opening.
