  • Publication number: 20050098317
Abstract: The present invention provides a process for forming cement in a well bore. In this process, a cement composition is formed that comprises a cement and one or more beads mixed with the cement. The cement composition containing the beads is displaced into the well bore, and an inert gas phase is introduced to the cement composition to control a density of the cement composition. The inert gas phase can be introduced by adding a gas generating material to the cement composition and/or a porous material to the cement composition. In an embodiment, the gas generating material is a nitrogen generating material that may be activated by an oxidizing agent. In another embodiment, the gas generating material is a hydrogen generating material, e.g., an aluminum powder. The present invention further provides a cement composition comprising a cement, one or more beads combined with the cement, and an inert gas phase created by, e.g., a gas generating material and/or a porous material.

  • Publication number: 20050061206
Abstract: Cement compositions comprising flexible, compressible beads, processes for preparing such cement compositions, and methods of cementing in subterranean formations using such cement compositions. One or more flexible, compressible beads are mixed with the cement before pumping the cement into a well bore. The flexible, compressible beads are preferably composed of an elastomeric material such as a copolymer of methylmethacrylate and acrylonitrile; a terpolymer of methylmethacrylate, acrylonitrile, and dichloroethane; a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer; and polystyrene. The flexible, compressible beads may be heated to expand the beads before mixing with the cement such that the ensuing cement composition will have a desired density. Non-flexible beads such as spherulites may also be added to the cement compositions.

  • Publication number: 20050023002
Abstract: Systems and methods for placing a tubular, braided sleeve in a well bore are provided. The sleeve is positioned within an interior of a carrier configured to hold the sleeve in an undeployed position, followed by lowering the carrier into the well bore. The sleeve may be used in conjunction with a curable resin that can be solidified to set the sleeve into a tubular cross section. After securing the sleeve to the well bore, the carrier may be moved away from the bottom of the well bore, deploying the sleeve and extending it along the contour of the well bore. The tubular sleeve may then be subsequently expanded in situ to increase its diameter. The curable resin can then cured to make the sleeve substantially rigid.

  • Publication number: 20050000694
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of stimulating a subterranean formation penetrated by a well. The formation has a water-bearing section and a hydrocarbon-bearing section. The method includes the steps of: (a) introducing into the formation an aqueous treatment fluid containing a hydrophobically-modified relative permeability modifier, and (b) introducing an acidizing treatment fluid into the formation. The hydrophobically-modified RPM can be formed and introduced into the formation in several ways. For example, the hydrophobically-modified RPM can be the reaction product of a hydrophilic polymer and a hydrophobic compound that are capable of reacting with each other. The hydrophilic polymer is a polymer containing reactive amino groups in the polymer backbone or as pendant groups, which are capable of reacting with a hydrophobic alkyl halide compound.
