  • Publication number: 20070264380
Abstract: An apparatus for placing mold charges into a mold of a compression molding machine includes at least one mold charge pick-up cup for receiving a severed charge of molten plastic, a vacuum source for applying a vacuum to the pick-up cup to retain the mold charge in the cup, and a source of gas (such as air) under pressure for periodically applying gas to the cup to release the mold charge from the cup. In one exemplary embodiment, the vacuum source applies a continuous vacuum to the cup, and the source of gas under pressure periodically applies gas to the cup to overcome the continuous vacuum at the cup. In another exemplary embodiment, vacuum and gas under pressure, are alternately applied to the cup. The vacuum source preferably includes a vacuum generator coupled to the source of gas under pressure for generating the vacuum to be applied to the cup. The vacuum source preferably includes a vacuum pump coupled to the source of gas under pressure for generating the vacuum to be applied to the cup.

  • Publication number: 20070098836
Abstract: A compression molding machine, for compression molding a closure shell having a base wall with an opening and in accordance with one aspect of the disclosure, includes a male mold section and a female mold section having associated surfaces that oppose each other to form a cavity for compression molding the base wall of the closure shell. An annular bead on one of these surfaces cooperates with the opposing other surface to compression mold a disk connected to the base wall by a thin frangible web. The disk and the shell are stripped separately from the mold so that the shell emerges from the machine with the opening formed in the shell base wall by removal of the disk within the machine.

  • Publication number: 20060286192
Abstract: A compression molding machine includes a support mounted for rotation around an axis and a plurality of angularly spaced molds disposed around the support. Each of the molds includes a first mold segment and a second mold segment. At least one of the mold segments is movable with respect to the other mold segment between a closed position for compression molding a plastic article, and an open position for removing a molded article from the mold and placing a mold charge into the mold. An apparatus is provided for placing mold charges into the molds in sequence.

  • Publication number: 20060286190
Abstract: A mold core includes a forming pin having a hollow interior and an end wall. A passage, preferably in the form of a hollow tube, extends into the hollow interior of the forming pin and has an end sealingly secured at a position spaced from the end wall of the forming pin. A poppet valve is disposed on the end wall of the forming pin. The poppet valve is responsive to air pressure within the passage to open and permit flow of air through the end wall of the forming pin to assist stripping of molded articles from the mold core. The poppet valve includes a valve element having an outer end at the end face of the forming pin and an inner end adjacent to the end of the passage. A spring preferably biases the valve element to a closed position. The spring preferably comprises a coil spring captured in compression between the valve element and the forming pin.

  • Publication number: 20060286191
Abstract: A machine for compression molding plastic articles includes an array of compression molds mounted on a support for movement through a defined mold path. A cam is disposed adjacent to the support to engage the molds in sequence and move at least one segment of each mold between open and closed positions. The cam has a first portion for opening the molds, a second portion for closing the molds in sequence and a pivot mounting the second cam portion to the first cam portion. A latch holds the second cam portion in a first position for closing the molds in sequence, and is responsive to excess force on the second cam portion to release said second cam portion to pivot to a second position spaced from the path.

  • Publication number: 20060233904
Abstract: A compression molding machine includes a wheel mounted for rotation around a horizontal axis and a plurality of angularly spaced molds disposed around the wheel. Each of the molds includes a first mold segment and a second mold segment disposed radially outwardly of the first mold segment. Each of the second mold segments is movable radially with respect to the associated first mold segment between a radially inner closed position with the first mold segment for compression molding a plastic article, and a radially outer open position spaced from the associated first mold segment for removing a molded article from the mold and placing a mold charge into the mold.

  • Patent number: 4512747
Abstract: An automatic apparatus employed to simulate material conveying hardware and sensors to test control systems for factories and warehouses. The simulated conveying system is displayed on a color graphics CRT with the state of the input and output signals and a graphic representation of individual packages. Animation provided by the invention allows system operation to be observed. An attached operator's console has a command menu with functions to control the simulation. The simulated system may be started, stepped, stopped and the reaction of the control system observed on the color graphic CRT. Scenarios which represent the expected operation of the conveying system, may be set up to exercise the control system and determine system operation under stress or unusual operating conditions. The device may also be used to monitor an installed conveying system and provide diagnostic capabilities when actual operation does not meet expected operation.

  • Patent number: 3998664
Abstract: A heat treated cast iron wherein the carbon and silicon contents are controlled to produce a white iron as cast in a sand mold and the sulfur content is in excess of that required to combine with all the manganese in the iron. The iron is annealed to produce temper carbon and a ferrous matrix containing a uniform distribution of iron sulfide particles of finite size.

  • Patent number: 3975191
Abstract: A method of producing cast iron wherein kish is added to either the molten iron or to the metal charge. Kish is graphite which floats to the surface of molten iron from a blast furnace. Each kish graphite flake has a very stable nucleus, predominately manganese sulfide, which initiates cell formation at or near the liquidus temperature when molten cast iron solidifies.
