  • Patent number: 9673996
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system for providing streaming media to a client device. Specifically, in a streaming media session that is initially ongoing between a content server and a client device via a first proxy server: (i) the first proxy server may determine that an interruption in the streaming media session is going to occur and responsively (a) send a transfer request to the client device and (b) send session information to a second proxy server, the session information comprising information identifying the streaming media session and a progress indicator that indicates a current status of the streaming media session, and (ii) after the transfer request and the session information is sent, continuing the streaming media session via the second proxy server. The second proxy server uses the progress indicator as a basis to continue the streaming media session with the client device.

  • Patent number: 9407769
Abstract: Ways of presenting a custom greeting to a user who retrieves a voicemail that was left by a caller are disclosed. In one embodiment, a voicemail server facilitates storing a voicemail in connection with an identifier that is associated with a calling device that was used by a caller in an attempt to call the user. A user-specific name is automatically retrieved based on the identifier. This name can be retrieved from the user's mobile device or from a remote address book. When the user retrieves his or her messages, the voicemail server presents a custom announcement introducing the message, where the custom announcement is based on the name retrieved.

  • Patent number: 8291107
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and systems using a Media Channel Descriptor (MCD) file to manage media streams in a coverage area of a wireless access network. For example, an exemplary method involves (a) receiving a request for a media stream in the first format (that was specified by the MCD file), wherein the request is received from an access terminal that is operating in a coverage area of a wireless access network; (b) in response to the request, initiating a media stream in the first format, to the access terminal; (c) making a determination as to whether or not, with the media steam in the first format, traffic in the coverage area has reached a threshold level; and (d) in response to the determination that the traffic in the coverage area has reached the threshold level, modifying the MCD file to indicate a second format for new media streams.

  • Patent number: 8264964
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for enhanced reverse-link auxiliary pilot triggering in an access terminal. An access terminal operating in a first state in which it transmits a primary beacon signal on an air interface link to a base station and concurrently transmits a secondary beacon signal to the base station upon a condition that the access terminal transmits packets with payloads exceeding a threshold size, may receive a command from the base station to unconditionally transmit the secondary beacon signal. In response to receiving the command, the access terminal will transition to operating in a second state in which it transmits a primary beacon signal on the air interface link to a base station and concurrently and unconditionally transmits the secondary beacon signal to the base station.

  • Patent number: 8219067
Abstract: A system, method, and computer-readable media are described for allowing a user to specify a desired time of delivery for a message (e.g., MMS message, SMS message). In one embodiment, a user interface is provided that allows the user to set a desired time of delivery while composing the message. The desired time of delivery is then included in the message. The recipient device places the message in a hidden folder until the desired time of delivery. Also, a messaging center may wait to deliver a messaging-waiting notification to the recipient until a low network usage period.

  • Patent number: 8159987
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for data communication between a wireless-communication system and one or more wireless-communication devices. The wireless-communication system broadcasts a standard pilot signal over a pilot channel. The method comprises (a) the wireless-communication system transmitting a first broadcast-mode message in a coverage area of the wireless-communication system, wherein the first broadcast-mode message indicates that the wireless-communication system will be operating in an alternative broadcast mode, and (b) the wireless-communication system operating in the alternative broadcast mode. Operating in the alternative broadcast involves (i) generating a modified pilot signal comprising the standard pilot signal and a data message inserted in the standard pilot signal and (ii) broadcasting the modified pilot signal via the pilot channel, which enables a wireless-communication device receiving the modified pilot signal to extract the data message therefrom.

  • Patent number: 8059542
Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for dynamically adapting operation of an auxiliary pilot according to reverse noise. An access terminal in a wireless communication system that includes a base station may operate in a first state in which the access terminal transmits a primary pilot signal on an air interface communication link to the base station, and also transmits an auxiliary pilot signal on the air interface communication link to the base station concurrently with transmission of the primary pilot signal. While operating in the first state, responsive at least to receiving a noise-level message from the base station indicating excessive reverse-link noise, the access terminal may transition to a second state in which it ceases to transmit the auxiliary pilot signal but continues to transmit the primary pilot signal.

  • Patent number: 7953893
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and system, in which a network entity determines that an HTTP response destined to a client station contains a markup document that references at least one object but that the HTTP response does not contain the object. In response, in addition to sending the HTTP response to the client station, the network entity will send to the client station a supplemental HTTP response that contains the object, without the client station sending a request for the object. By avoiding the need for the client station to send a request for the object, the extent of HTTP communication by the client station is reduced. In the situation where the client station is a wireless handset or other wireless communication device, the method is particularly advantageous, as the method can reduce the number of air interface communications and can thus help to conserve valuable air interface resources.
