In various embodiments, the second and third diameters are larger than the first diameter of the arrow shaft and may be equal. The first and second rings function to allow the arrow to be shot from a crossbow having a barrel to reduce the amount of friction that exists between the arrow and the barrel walls and to reduce the amount of noise generated as the arrow traverses and exits the barrel.

The clutch mechanism is configured to at least temporarily rotationally fix the shaft to the housing to prevent the shaft from rotating in a first direction and an opposite second direction until a force is exerted on the handle to overcome the frictional forces exerted by the clutch mechanism.
