Patent number: 10526854Abstract: A method for handling pipe includes orienting a pipe having first and second ends so that the second end of the pipe is positioned vertically above the first end, and while the pipe is oriented with the second end positioned vertically above the first end, gripping onto the pipe proximate the first end with a lift jaw assembly that is coupled to a lift arm assembly. The pipe is vertically misaligned at a substantially non-zero misalignment angle relative to the first end of the pipe while gripping the pipe with the lift jaw assembly, wherein vertically misaligning the pipe includes rotating the lift jaw assembly relative to the lift arm assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 2018Date of Patent: January 7, 2020Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: Gregory Keogh, Baldwin Zahn, Christopher Yeldell, Albert Koether

Patent number: 10053934Abstract: A racking arm assembly is adapted to be mounted on a drill floor of a drilling rig and includes a lift arm assembly having a first arm that is movably coupled to a vertical support column, wherein the lift arm assembly is adapted to be raised and lowered along a vertical length of the vertical support column during a pipe handling operation. A lift jaw assembly is pivotably coupled to a second arm of the lift arm assembly and includes a lift jaw assembly having a lift jaw gripping apparatus that is adapted to grip and fixedly hold a drill pipe stand proximate a pin end of the drill pipe stand during the pipe handling operation. The lift jaw gripping apparatus is further adapted to be rotated relative to the lift arm assembly about a substantially horizontal axis while the lift jaw gripping apparatus is fixedly holding the drill pipe stand.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2014Date of Patent: August 21, 2018Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: Gregory Keogh, Baldwin Zahn, Christopher Yeldell, Albert Koether

Patent number: 8827008Abstract: A racking board for retaining tubulars is disclosed having a first finger, a second forger positioned generally parallel to the first finger and with a gap between the fingers serving as a storage area for tubulars. A first inflatable member is supported adjacent to the first finger and a second inflatable member is supported adjacent to the second finger, the inflatable members adapted to expand radially into the gap upon inflation so as to capture and retain the tubular. In some embodiments, a single inflatable member in employed to expand into the gap and retain the tubular. A method of racking tubulars is disclosed using elongate, inflatable restraints.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2011Date of Patent: September 9, 2014Assignee: National Oilwell Varco, L.P.Inventors: John Benjamin Hankins, Baldwin Zahn

Publication number: 20060104747Abstract: The pipe racking system is designed to handle drilling tubulars (primarily drill pipe and drill collars) between the racked or setback position and the well center. The racking system can mechanically grasp a stand of pipe, lift the pipe sufficient for free movement, and deliver the pipe to either the setback area for storage or to well center to be added to the drilling string. The purpose of this newly developed system is to move pipe safely and efficiently in the vertical position for drilling operations. Together with the use of its mechanized fingerboard, the system automates the process of handling and storing pipe vertically, thus eliminating the need for a worker at the racking board level. The system is capable of being installed within the masts of smaller rigs and may remain installed in the mast during rig moves thus minimizing any disassembly for rig-down.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 21, 2005Publication date: May 18, 2006Inventors: Baldwin Zahn, Mark Fillip, Ryllee Tettleton, Tom Bui

Patent number: 7040411Abstract: Methods and apparatus for handling blowout preventer stacks. In one embodiment the handling system includes a cart, or skid, providing a base platform, a tilting frame, and a lifting frame. The stack is attached to the lifting frame, which is slidingly supported by the tilting frame, which pivots relative to the cart. The cart provides for positional adjustment of the stack in a first horizontal direction, while positional adjustment in a second, perpendicular horizontal direction is provided by a lateral adjustment mechanism coupling the tilting frame and the cart. The lifting frame can be moved vertically relative to the cart and also provides for rotational adjustment of the stack about its central axis.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2004Date of Patent: May 9, 2006Assignee: National-Oilwell, L.P.Inventors: Bryan Kainer, Baldwin Zahn

Patent number: 5423390Abstract: The pipe racker assembly includes a mast, a dolly assembly vertically slidably secured to the mast for vertical movement, a handling arms assembly rotatably secured to the dolly assembly and having an upper handling arm extensible to accommodate pipes of varying length and as long as 45 feet and lower arms capable of gripping pipe either from a horizontal pipe rack or from a carousel pipe rack turntable when the handling arms are rotated 90.degree. on the dolly assembly. A stabilizer is secured to the ends of the handling arms in order to allow the handling arms assembly to be supported remote from the pipe racker assembly to reduce the structural strength requirements of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1993Date of Patent: June 13, 1995Assignee: Dreco, Inc.Inventors: Robert B.
