Patent number: 11945401Abstract: A systems for detecting level sensor malfunction or tampering based on reductant consumption and determining when to initiate a quality check of reductant used in an aftertreatment system are disclosed. The system comprises a memory storing instructions and a processor executing the instructions to perform a process including: receiving dosing data associated with an amount of DEF supplied to the aftertreatment system; receiving tank level data from a level sensor in a DEF tank; comparing the dosing data with the tank level data; and based on the comparison: initiating, by the one or more processors, a quality check; and/or determining, by the one or more processors, a possible error requiring further diagnostics; and causing to present, by the one or more processors, an indication that the quality check is being initiated and/or that a possible error requires further diagnostics on a display.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2022Date of Patent: April 2, 2024Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Jay Venkataraghavan, Baoyong Liu, Urvish Joshi, Kevin Lloyd Dea

Publication number: 20170015201Abstract: A system for monitoring operation of a retarding grid associated with a traction motor of a machine includes a pressure sensor and a temperature sensor for measuring atmospheric pressure and temperature in real time. The system further includes a controller that determines a current air density on the basis of the measured atmospheric pressure and temperature. The controller then determines a threshold retarding power limit for the retarding grid on the basis of the current air density; and a threshold torque limit for the traction motor on the basis of the determined threshold retarding power limit and a current wheel speed of the machine. The controller determines a current retarding torque at the traction motor, and selectively generates a warning signal to an operator of the machine on the basis of the threshold torque limit determined for the traction motor and the current retarding torque at the traction motor.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 15, 2015Publication date: January 19, 2017Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Alexander C Crosman, III, Baoyong Liu, Joshua M Williams, Brett M Nee

Patent number: 8516800Abstract: A system and method controls injection of a reductant agent in a selective catalytic reduction system. The system and method include an injector injecting the reductant agent to an exhaust system directing exhaust from a power system. A coolant system circulates coolant proximate to the injector. A coolant temperature sensor monitors a coolant temperature of the coolant. A controller adjusts the injection timing of the injector based at least in part on the coolant temperature.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2010Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Baoyong Liu, Sylvain J. Charbonnel, Jinhui Sun

Patent number: 8359833Abstract: A method of introducing reductant to an exhaust stream is disclosed. The method may include ordering a first dosing event, supplying a reductant to a dispensing device in response to ordering the first dosing event, dispensing reductant from the dispensing device into the exhaust stream, and forcing reductant from the dispensing device toward a reductant source, wherein sufficient reductant remains in a pumping device and a fluid passage to keep the pumping device primed.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2009Date of Patent: January 29, 2013Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Purna Chander Nalla, Amit Jayachandran, James Mutti, Baoyong Liu, Ethan D. Sanborn
