The postal item is delivered to a box of an electronic package mailbox, and the identification number of the postal item is recorded and stored in the electronic package mailbox and/or a central databank. The disclosure further relates to an electronic package mailbox, which includes means for recording an identification code for postal items and subsequently transmitting the identification code to a data processing unit for storage of transport data.
