Patent number: 8645204Abstract: A method for using promotional programs and merchant values is disclosed. In one example, the method includes receiving an authorization request message including a merchant verification value through a payment processing network, where the authorization request message is associated with a purchase by a consumer. A merchant-specific promotional program is then determined using the merchant verification value, and the merchant specific promotional program is performed. For example, the promotional program can be a sweepstakes and the task may be determining of the consumer is an instant winner.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2010Date of Patent: February 4, 2014Assignee: Visa U.S.A. Inc.Inventor: Barbara Patterson

Patent number: 8636203Abstract: Embodiments of methods and systems in accordance with the present invention allow partial authorization of a financial transaction. In one embodiment, where a balance of a prepaid card is insufficient to cover the entire amount of a transaction, the issuer of the prepaid card transmits over a payment processing system, approval for only the amount remaining on the card. The transaction can then be completed by the purchaser providing an additional sum from another source, such as a credit card. Such automatic partial authorization in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention avoids the delay and cost associated with having to re-execute the transaction for a less than the entire amount.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2006Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: Visa U.S.A. Inc.Inventors: Barbara Patterson, Steve Diamond, Todd Brockman, Richard Pileggi, Amy Dalziel

Patent number: 8311943Abstract: Techniques for processing of recurring payments are provided that do not require merchants to update consumer account information when a consumer is issued a new account number for a payment card or the like. For example, when a consumer is issued a new account number by an issuer, the new account number can be provided to a payment processing network. A server computer in the payment processing network then identifies any recurring payments associated with the user's old account number and provides the consumer with a list of merchants for which the consumer had established recurring payments associated with the old account number. The consumer is then provided the opportunity to select those merchants for whom the consumer wishes to continue the recurring payments using the new account number.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2011Date of Patent: November 13, 2012Inventor: Barbara Patterson

Patent number: 8290865Abstract: Systems and methods for processing bill payments. A consumer may send a bill payment request online to a payment processing network, such as through an online bill payment interface. The payment processing network can coordinate with a non-bank acquirer to settle the bill payment with the biller. The liability for the transaction may fall on the issuer, who may be responsible for all parties fulfilling the transaction. The non-bank acquirer may coordinate among the various parties, but may not have liability for fulfillment of the transaction. The non-bank acquirer can deposit funds for the bill payment in a biller bank, and accounts receivable data can be sent to the biller for reconciliation of the bill.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2009Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Visa International Service AssociationInventors: Kimberly Lawrence, Barbara Patterson

Patent number: 8255327Abstract: Techniques for processing on-line banking bill payment requests are provided. A bill payment request is received from an operator of an on-line banking bill payment web site. The operator may be a bank. The request is for payment of a bill using a portable consumer device. A transaction request is then generated for an issuer and sent to the issuer for authorization. The issuer then sends a response indicating whether the transaction request is approved or declined. Remittance information for a biller is generated if the transaction is approved. The remittance information is then forwarded to the operator of the on-line banking bill payment web site for forwarding to a user of the portable consumer device. Additionally, the remittance information is sent to an acquirer or cash management bank, which can forward the information to the biller associated with the bill payment request.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 2011Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Inventors: Lynn Kemper, Barbara Patterson, Kimberly Lawrence

Patent number: 8095464Abstract: Techniques for processing of recurring payments are provided that allow a consumer to decide whether to update consumer account information at a merchant when a consumer is issued new account information for a payment card or the like. For example, a consumer may register with a payment processing network associated with the consumer's payment card. During registration, the consumer may indicate the payment card number and expiration date, the name of merchants that the consumer pays on a recurring basis using the payment card and the corresponding merchant website addresses, in what form the consumer would like to receive alerts (e.g. text message, email), and when to receive alerts (e.g. a particular number of days prior to the expiration date). The payment processing network sends the consumer an alert message based on the preferences indicated during registration, including the names and website links for each merchant indicated during registration.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 2010Date of Patent: January 10, 2012Assignee: Vista International Service AssociationInventors: Barbara Patterson, Donald L.
