Patent number: 9183766Abstract: The present invention is a metallized shrinkable label and a method for producing the same. The label of the invention is composed of a shrinkable film base and a graphic. The graphic is created by combining pigmented inks, a metallic coating and a shrink-resistant coating which is printed in a predetermined pattern with gaps so that upon exposure of the label to heat, the gaps close thereby forming a continuous graphic layer. Advantageously, the shrink-resistant coating minimizes discoloration and pleating of the metallic coating.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2013Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: CCL Label, Inc.Inventors: Barron G. McKillip, Ulrich E. Weyermann, Daniel B. Chaffee

Publication number: 20030067157Abstract: Printed graphics for packaging, labels or signs including an etched or embossed appearance enhanced with a three-dimensional effect. The graphic includes a transparent substrate, a first extraordinarily thick ridge of ink deposited to form an image on one side of the substrate and a second extraordinarily thick ridge of ink deposited on the other side of the substrate. The two extraordinarily thick ridges preferably are in registration with one another to provide a three-dimensional appearance of the design. For an embossed appearance, the ridges of ink are uniformly smooth. For an etched appearance, the ridges of ink are formed with a textured pattern. A layer of reflective material may be sprayed, electroplated or vacuum metallized onto the substrate over the first thick ridge of ink to further enhance the appearance of the design. Alternatively, a label stock may be pressed onto the substrate over the first ridge of ink on the substrate.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 5, 2001Publication date: April 10, 2003Inventor: Barron G. Publication number: 20030021918Abstract: A metalized shrink film for contoured containers and other articles and a process for manufacturing the same. A preferred metalized shrink film includes a heat-shrinkable film layer, a varnish disposed over the film on at least one side, and a metalized layer disposed over the varnish. The metalized layer is preferably viewable through the heat-shrinkable film layer. Preferably, the varnish is a clear and ultraviolet curable, and the heat-shrinkable film includes images or graphics. A preferred method of manufacturing the metalized shrink film includes: providing a heat-shrinkable film material; applying varnish over the film; and applying a metal material over the varnish and any regions of the film not covered by the varnish. Preferably, the heat shrink film is incorporated into a heat-shrinkable label or sleeve used on contoured containers, such as bottles.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2001Publication date: January 30, 2003Inventor: Barron G. Patent number: 5344305Abstract: A method and apparatus for in-mold labelling in which labels are individually cut from a continuous web as demanded by the cycling of a mold. The web of labels is advanced through a die cutter which sequentially cuts individual labels from the web. A transfer device picks a freshly cut label from the die cutter and places the label within the cavity of a mold located in proximity to the die cutter. By individually cutting labels from a web at the time of use rather than loading a stack of precut labels in a magazine, the invention allows for the use of thinner, less expensive, and compatible plastic label material.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1993Date of Patent: September 6, 1994Assignee: CCL Label, Inc.Inventor: Barron G. McKillip

Patent number: 5340628Abstract: A laser markable sheet having a thermally sensitive base sheet overlaid by a transparent cover sheet. The cover sheet is adhered to the base sheet by a transparent adhesive. Markings may be produced on the base sheet by directing a laser beam through the cover sheet and the transparent adhesive so that the beam impinges on the front surface of the cover sheet. The rear surface of the cover sheet may be coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive, and the pressure sensitive adhesive may be temporarily covered by a release liner.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1992Date of Patent: August 23, 1994Assignee: CCL Label, Inc.Inventor: Barron G. McKillip

Patent number: 5328738Abstract: A metallized label and a manufacturing method are disclosed in which a translucent base sheet is printed with markings on its rear surface, and a metal layer is applied over the printed markings. The printed markings form apertures or translucent areas through which the metal layer is visible from the front of the label. Adhesive and a release liner are applied to the rear of the metal layer. The metal layer may be applied only in areas in correspondence with the apertures.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1993Date of Patent: July 12, 1994Assignee: CCL Label, Inc.Inventors: Barron G. McKillip, Donald P. Klein

Patent number: 5219183Abstract: A printable sheet having one or more separable identification or the like is disclosed. A face sheet is overlyingly adhered to a backing sheet by a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive. The rear surface of the face sheet is pattern coated with a release agent only in regions disposed in registration with the cards to be formed as portions of the face sheet. A cut line is formed through the face sheet along the perimeters of the cards so that the cards may be readily peeled away leaving the remainder of the face sheet adhered to the backing sheet. The printable sheet may be imprinted on automated printing devices and is particularly suited for printing with a laser printer. Also disclosed is a method for making the printable sheet.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1991Date of Patent: June 15, 1993Assignee: CCL Label, Inc.Inventor: Barron G. McKillip
