An EMV transaction is commenced at the POS terminal with a particular payment device. The POS terminal receives a request from the payment device to interrupt the EMV transaction. The POS terminal responds to the request by interrupting the EMV transaction and taking an action indicated by the request. The action is not required for execution of the standard EMV transaction flow.
