Patent number: 10783347Abstract: An apparatus comprises a fingerprint sensor having a set of capacitive elements configured for capacitively coupling to a user fingerprint. The fingerprint sensor may be disposed under a control button or display element of an electronic device, for example one or more of a control button and a display component. A responsive element is responsive to proximity of the user fingerprint, for example one or both of a first circuit responsive to motion of the control button, and a second circuit responsive to a coupling between the fingerprint and a surface of the display element. The fingerprint sensor is disposed closer to the fingerprint than the responsive element. The control button or display component may include an anisotropic dielectric material, for example sapphire.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2019Date of Patent: September 22, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Benjamin J. Pope, Shawn Arnold, Barry J. Corlett, Terry L. Gilton, Syed Husaini, Steven Webster, Scott A. Myers, Matthew D. Hill, Benjamin B. Lyon

Patent number: 9026691Abstract: A touch I/O device controller may operate in an idle state, a wait for finger on state, and a finger on state. The finger on state may include a hold sub-state, a capture sub-state, a navigation sub-state, and a pre-capture sub-state. The controller may switch states and/or sub-states based on commands received from its host or based on a sub-state variable set by the host. When the controller detects a finger of a user and enters the finger on state, the touch I/O device may enter a particular sub-state based on the sub-state variable. Further, when a fingerprint is captured in capture sub-state, the controller may switch sub-states based on the value of the sub-state variable. In various implementations, the host may provide one or more APIs that may be utilized by applications to directly influence the controller and/or request that the host do so.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2013Date of Patent: May 5, 2015Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventor: Barry J. Patent number: 8713214Abstract: A media processing system and device with improved power usage characteristics, improved audio functionality and improved media security is provided. Embodiments of the media processing system include an audio processing subsystem that operates independently of the host processor for long periods of time, allowing the host processor to enter a low power state while the audio data is being processed. Other aspects of the media processing system provide for enhanced audio effects such as mixing stored audio samples into real-time telephone audio. Still other aspects of the media processing system provide for improved media security due to the isolation of decrypted audio data from the host processor.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2013Date of Patent: April 29, 2014Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: David G. Patent number: 8692755Abstract: Embodiments of a system that includes one or more integrated circuits are described. During operation, the system transforms the video image from an initial brightness domain to a linear brightness domain, which includes a range of brightness values corresponding to substantially equidistant adjacent radiant-power values in a displayed video image. In this linear brightness domain, the system may determine an intensity setting of the light source based on at least a portion of the transformed video image, such as the portion of the transformed video image that includes spatially varying visual information in the video image. Moreover, the system may modify the transformed video image so that a product of the intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the modified video image approximately equals a product of a previous intensity setting and a transmittance associated with the video image. For example, the modification may include changing brightness values in the transformed video image.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2008Date of Patent: April 8, 2014Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Ulrich T.
