  • Patent number: 8783368
Abstract: A running tool for well drilling operations is carried by a running string into and out of a wellbore. A collet is carried by the running tool, the collet having fingers with a radially expanded position arranged to latch against a wellbore shoulder in the wellbore. The fingers are resiliently and radially contractible. A shear element is carried by the collet, the shear element preventing the fingers from radially contracting to unlatch the running tool while the shear element is intact. If a selected axial force is applied against the shear element, it shears, freeing the collet fingers to retract. The collet may be part of a tool to set and release a liner hanger from engagement with a string of casing.

  • Patent number: 7647990
Abstract: A method for drilling with a liner includes: providing a liner string including an upper portion extending towards surface and a lower portion; drilling to a depth with the liner string; disconnecting the upper portion from the lower portion; pulling the upper portion from the well; and leaving the lower portion in the well to line the wellbore. A drilling assembly for drilling a borehole with a borehole liner includes: an upper liner string; a lower liner string including an upper end and a lower end; a releasable connector connecting the lower liner string to the upper liner string; and a drilling assembly connectable at the lower end of the lower liner string.

  • Publication number: 20040194954
Abstract: A liner hanger, in either a non-rotating or rotating format, has a large hanging capacity due to a one or more axially spaced sets of circumferentially spaced slips housed in openings in a slip housing, the slip housing being moveable axially relative to a mandrel for actuating the slips over cams supported by the mandrel. One or more sets of sets of slips are spaced axially along the slip housing. An annular space is formed between the mandrel and slip housing for maximizing fluid bypass through the annular space. Bypass is further improved by profiling the slip housing. In the rotating version, a separate sleeve is positioned between the mandrel and the slip housing for supporting the cams and the mandrel is supported on the cam sleeve through an upper bearing which permits the mandrel to rotate on the cam sleeve when the slips are set.

  • Patent number: 6782954
Abstract: A straddle packer tool comprises a mandrel and a housing. Spaced packers are carried by the housing. A plurality of bypass ports are arranged in the mandrel and housing for aligning in several positions: a first downhole position for bypassing fluid around the packers and through the mandrel; an intermediate position wherein the bypass ports are misaligned and a first internal pressure actuates the packers to isolate a zone and a second higher internal pressure releases a stop for enabling relative movement to an uphole position wherein the bypasses are misaligned and the mandrel's bore is opened to isolated zone.
