  • Publication number: 20070257423
Abstract: A printing system for printing images onto copy sheets and tab stock includes a media registration transport for transporting a media sheet along a path. The printing system further includes a sensing system having a plurality of sensors positioned in line and orthogonal to the feed direction of the sheet path for detecting a leading edge of the media sheet. A control system provides for detecting signals at the times when each of the plurality of sensors are occluded and a control algorithm compares every one of the sensor signals with each other of the sensor signals. The system then identifies at least one pair of sensor signals having inconsistent readings with the other of sensor signals and, determines the presence of a tab on the leading edge based on the inconsistent sensor signal readings and calculates sheet skew based on the other sensor signals.

  • Publication number: 20070252323
Abstract: A print media sheets path selection system with a repositionable gate for selectably directing even rapidly sequentially moving sheets with small inter-sheet time gaps into different output paths with different gate positions. This gate is partially or entirely repositionable to an opposite gate position for providing a different output path for the next sheet while a portion of the prior sheet is still moving past the gate. That may be accomplished by providing a low limited force engagement of the part of the gate engaging the sheet, allowing that sheet to slide past at least the tip of the gate without damage, by a compliant gate tip or other low gate force system. Thereby the repositioning of the gate between its different gate positions is not limited to the short time gap between the sequential sheets and can be accomplished less critically and/or with lower force and acceleration.

  • Publication number: 20070188576
Abstract: An ink jet imaging system comprises a heated imaging drum that rotates in at least one direction, a print head for ejecting ink onto the heated imaging drum as it rotates past the print head to form an image, a media sheet transport for synchronizing movement of a media sheet with rotation of the heated imaging drum, a transfixing roller that forms a transfixing nip with the heated imaging drum to transfix the image on the rotating heated image drum onto the media sheet synchronized by the media sheet transport, and a media director located between the media sheet transport and the heated imaging drum to direct the media sheet into close proximity with the heated imaging drum at a position sufficiently prior to the transfixing nip that the heated imaging drum heats the media sheet before the media sheet enters the transfixing nip.

  • Publication number: 20070140767
Abstract: A printing system comprises a paper path architecture for parallel printing using multiple marking engines. The media path configuration enables all the media feed trays to be located in one place, relative to the marking engines. A cross-over module is located between marking engines. The cross-over module can interleave media sheets that are being transported away from a first marking engine with the sheets being transported to the second marking engine. The cross-over module also includes a straight through path that enables media sheets to be transported directly to a finishing device without going through either marking engine. The marking engines include internal duplex loops such that media can be supplied to each engine in alternate groups. A merge module selectively merges the media which can then be further processed in a finishing transition module prior to communication to a finishing device.

  • Publication number: 20070120305
Abstract: A merge module suited to use in a printing system in which streams of marked print media arrive at angularly spaced directions from two marking engines includes a first media transport section which receives a first portion of print media and outputs it in a first direction. A second media transport section receives a second portion of print media. The second print media transport section redirects the second portion of print media, optionally rotates it, and outputs it in the first direction. A third media transport section receives a third portion of print media. The third media transport section redirects the third portion of print media, optionally rotates it, and outputs it in the first direction. Print media output from one marking engine may be alternately delivered to the second and third transport sections. An output path receives print media from the three media transport sections.

  • Publication number: 20070096385
Abstract: A retard feeder adapted to separate and advance media sheets comprising a media sheet advancing device including a drive roll and a retard roll. The drive roll and the retard roll include a feed nip therebetween for driving the media sheets at a velocity. A first drive system is provided to selectively drive the drive roll and the at least one nudger roll in a forward direction. A second drive system drives the retard roll through a slip clutch having a torque wherein the slip clutch torque allows the retard roll to rotate at substantially the same velocity as the drive roll when only one sheet is in the feed nip. The retard feeder further includes a motion sensor for detecting a signal when the retard roll stops rotating at the velocity of the drive roll corresponding to when more than one sheet is in the feed nip. The second drive system can selectively vary the velocity of the retard roll in response to the signal from the retard roll motion sensor.

  • Publication number: 20070023994
Abstract: Embodiments herein measure current/voltage levels of a drive motor when media is in contact with a drive roller so as to determine the drive force imparted by the drive rollers on the media. Then, embodiments herein can reference the predetermined relationship between roller drive force and media/drive roller velocity ratios to determine a difference between the velocity of the drive roller and the velocity the media based on the drive force. Once this velocity difference is determined, embodiments herein can change the current/voltage levels being applied to the drive motor if the actual velocity of the media is different than the intended velocity of the media so as to correct the velocity of the media. Thus, when referencing the predetermined relationship, embodiments herein produce a velocity ratio correction factor.

  • Publication number: 20060170144
Abstract: In a printing system in which the print media sheets are alternately fed from the same stack in the same tray by two sheet feeders at opposite sides into different sheet paths, at least one of the sheet feeders is repositionable towards and away from the other for feeding different size sheets, and the connecting sheet path is repositionable with the repositioning of the sheet feeder. The repositioning of the sheet feeder and its associated sheet path may be automatic in coordination with the normal resetting of a tray stack edge guide with the loading of different size sheets into the tray. The enhanced rate sheet feeding may be for a dual print engine printing system and/or selectably common or reversed sheet facing. Alternating coordinated lifting of a nudger roll of one sheet feeder with operation of the opposing sheet feeder, and retard nips spaced from the stack, may be provided.

  • Publication number: 20060163801
Abstract: A closed loop feedback method that continuously adjusts the lateral and skew position of a sheet includes a first sensor that is used to measure lateral sheet edge position. A second sensor measures the lateral sheet edge position at a certain distance from the first sensor. Sheet skew values can thus be calculated. Lateral and skew controllers provide outputs to lateral and skew actuators, respectively, to adjust the sheet position. A different method of registering sheets laterally and in skew enables active sheet deskew without translating the sheet in the cross-process direction. A sensor carriage position is controlled to find the sheet edge after which deskew control can start. The average value of the carriage position can then be fed in a feedforward manner to move the image location to match the average paper position. This achieves good average lateral registration and active skew control at a reduced cost.
