    Abstract: An engine comprises an engine block having at least one combustion chamber and a rotary valve rotatably mounted on top of the engine block. The rotary valve includes an intake passage for diverting air into the combustion chamber and an exhaust passage for exhausting combustion by products from the combustion chamber. The engine further includes a head surrounding the rotary valve. Seals surrounding the combustion chamber seat against the bottom surface of the rotary valve. Seals on the circumference of the rotary valve seat against the head. The seals are arranged to provide a double seal for the combustion chamber during the initial portion of the power stroke. The rotary valve may further include a pressure relief valve to reduce pressure and temperature in the combustion chamber during at least a portion of the power cycle.
