The foot and nose are pivotally biased by corresponding compression springs that are substantially enclosed and protected from the environment.     Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for applying a fold-over seal about overlapping lengths of strap. The open seal is positioned with the strap lengths between the legs. Opposing jaws are pivoted about axes against the open seal legs toward the strap lengths to bend the seal legs inwardly while decreasing the distance between the seal and the pivot axes of the jaws. The decrease in the distance between the jaw pivot axes and the seal is limited at a predetermined minimum distance, but the jaws continue to be pivoted to fold the seal legs adjacent the strap lengths. As the jaws approach the fully closed position, the distance between the seal and the jaw pivot axes is increased, and this forces the seal crown and legs closer together as the crimping of the seal is completed.

    Abstract: A strapping tool for tensioning a strap loop around an article and for crimping or notching a push-type seal around the overlapping strap portions is provided with a frame, an arm pivotally mounted on the frame for pivoting movement in a first direction and in a second, opposite direction, an abutment nose on the arm for engaging the seal during tensioning, a spring biasing the arm in the first direction during tensioning, a motor-driven tension wheel for pulling one of the overlapping strap portions through the seal to tension the loop whereby the tension reaction urges the abutment nose against the seal and, at a predetermined tension level, causes the arm to overcome the spring and pivot relative to the frame in the second direction. A jaw assembly is provided for crimping or notching the seal and a control means is provided for actuating the jaw assembly in response to the movement of the arm in the second direction at the predetermined tension level.

The injection device is adapted for use specifically with a dunnage bag having a housing defining a chamber extending from an opening on the exterior of the bag to an opening in the interior of the bag. A tube assembly is provided for supplying pressurized gas or air adjacent the housing on the dunnage bag. A ring-like alignment frame is provided on one end of the tube for locating the tubing relative to the housing and in alignment with the chamber in the housing. The alignment frame is substantially open or apertured to permit free flow of ambient air past exterior portions of the tube into the chamber. One or more orifices are located on a portion of the tube to allow discharge of jets of high pressure gas or air therethrough.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for rapidly filling an inflatable dunnage bag with entrained ambient air to a predetermined maximum stabilized pressure level. A dunnage bag is provided with a housing defining a chamber extending from an opening on the exterior of the bag to an opening in the interior of the bag. In the preferred form of the method, a supply of pressurized gas or air is brought adjacent to the housing in the dunnage bag and is located relative to the housing and in alignment with the chamber to permit flow of ambient air into the chamber. One or more jets of high pressure gas or air are discharged into the chamber substantially parallel to, and spaced from, the walls of the chamber, whereby, ambient air is entrained through the chamber to the interior of the bag until an equilibrium is reached where the mass flow rate of the air entering the bag equals the mass flow rate of the air flowing back out of the bag in response to the internal pressure.

    Abstract: A strapping tool for tensioning and shearing strap has a tensioning wheel, a ratchet wheel means associated with the tensioning wheel, and a pawl adapted to engage the ratchet wheel means when the tensioning wheel is rotated in a direction opposite to the tensioning direction. When the pawl is engaged, the ratchet wheel drives a single stroke cut-off mechanism. A latch means is provided to place the pawl into engagement with the ratchet wheel. A pawl positioning means connects the latch means and the pawl, and releases the pawl from engagement with the ratchet wheel means as a cut-off stroke is executed. The strapping tool is further provided with a cutting block which has a chamfer along the cutting edge of the block so that the edge of the cut strap is bent downwardly upon being cut, and wear on the cutting edge is minimized as the strap is tensioned.

    Abstract: An inflatable dunnage bag having a relatively thin-film, flexible, gastight bladder is provided with a fill valve device extending from the exterior of the bag to the interior of the bladder. The fill valve device includes a hollow housing which is mounted on one end by means of a flange to the outer surface of one wall of the bladder. Within the housing there is an orifice and a plug member which is spring-biased in sealing engagement against the orifice. The plug member extends beyond the end of the housing and into the bladder. A flange on the end of the plug member in the bladder is substantially parallel to, and spaced away from, the mounting flange/bladder wall interface to provide a separation of the bladder walls, to deflect the filling gas to prevent impingement upon the bladder wall opposite the housing, and to provide an anti-blowout stop thereby preventing the plug member from being blown out of engagement with the valve housing when the bag is subjected to high compressive loads.
