  • Patent number: 6779119
Abstract: A variety of performance optimization techniques are provided that are based upon a history of a user's usage patterns. To reduce actual response time, the system prefetches information in anticipation of the user's request. To reduce perceived response time, if a response to the user's request is likely to be delayed, the system initiates other anticipated fast-response processes for the user. To ease the user's interaction with the system, the user's interface is dynamically modified to facilitate the entry of anticipated requests. To improve security, increased security measures are invoked when the user's request pattern is inconsistent with prior request patterns. At a system level, performance assessments and optimizations, including dynamic load balancing, are based on the prior usage patterns of mulitple users.

  • Patent number: 6549217
Abstract: Methods, computer systems, software and computer readable media containing the software for bookmarking, or saving, multiple profiles associated with a user of a computer system, and for activating saved user profiles. At a top operating system level, a bookmarked user profile indicates the arrangement of the user's display devices available, including the type, position and size of open windows, as well as other of the user's preference parameters. At lower application levels, a bookmarked user profile indicates the arrangement of an application window, as well as other application preference parameters. A bookmark, or a bookmarked user profile, is activated by selection from a menu that can be displayed in the top level operating system desktop or within an application window. Commands are also provided for creating and managing bookmarks associated with a user.
