Abstract: When a user of a device set requests a presentation of a content item, the presentation is often carried out on the device with which the user initiated the request, or a different device that the user specifically chooses. The resulting presentation may exhibit lower quality than if the content item were presented using a different device of the device set, but the user may be unaware of the relative merits of the devices, or unwilling to perform the actions to transfer the presentation to a different device. Instead, an automated comparison of the device properties of the devices with the content properties of the content item may inform an automated identification, and recommendation to the user, of an alternative device that is more suitable for presenting the content item. If the user accepts the recommendation, the presentation of the content item may be transferred to the recommended device.

For example, a media object (e.g., an image or video), is selected for composition with content, such as where a message, interactive content, a hyperlink, or other types of content is overlaid or embedded into the media object to create a composite media object. The content is added into an area of the media object that is selectively identified to reduce occlusion and/or improve visual cohesiveness between the content and the media object (e.g., added to an area with a similar or complimentary color, having an adequate size with spare amounts of visual features such as a soccer player, a ball, or other entity, etc.). In this way, the content may be add into the area of the media object to create a composite media object to provide to users.

However, on-demand retrieval may impose an undesirable delay in the presentation of the content; may spontaneously alter the layout of the hosting item; and/or may involve an expedient but unsophisticated selection among the content items of a content store (e.g., random selection), resulting in the presentation of irrelevant and/or redundant content. Instead, a device may prefetch content items into a content cache, such that when a user later requests to view a hosting item, the device may insert a content item selected from the content cache. The device may also notify the content server when a content item has been presented to the user; by marking the content item as such, the content server may provide additional, fresh content for the device content cache.

For example, signals, associated with a user (e.g., a location of the user, an event occurring near the user, an activity being performed by the user, content of a message recently received by the user or being composed by the user, etc.), are evaluated to identify a context associated with the user (e.g., the user may be composing a social network post about a basketball game that the user is attending). The context is applied to content (e.g., photos, videos, documents, webpages, etc.), available to the user, to create contextualized content indicative of how appropriate or relevant such content is given the context (e.g., a basketball game photo may be more relevant than a work document). A content sharing recommendation of contextualized content may be provided to the user.
