The disclosure here provides new tools for enriching somatic mammary stem cells and mammary tumor stem cells. Methods of screening for agents that modulate LRP5 activity, of treating mammary tumor or breast cancer, of monitoring somatic mammary stem cells and mammary tumor stem cells in vivo are also provided, and of assessing prognosis of human breast cancer.
