Patent number: 8655845Abstract: A mechanism is provided for reducing duplicate information. Diagnostic data associated with a new incident that has occurred is received and at least one new incident dump file is created for the new incident that includes some or all of the diagnostic data. The diagnostic data in the at least one new incident dump file is compared to diagnostic data in at least one corresponding preceding incident dump file. Responsive to the at least one new incident dump file comprising diagnostic data that is different from the at least one corresponding preceding incident dump file, at least one comparison dump file is generated that comprises only the differences in the at least one new incident dump file that are not contained in the at least one corresponding preceding incident dump file. A report package that includes the at least one comparison dump file is then transmitted to a support system.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 2012Date of Patent: February 18, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John J. Auvenshine, Basheer N. Bristow, Carlin M. Kartchner, Mauricio Perez Hernandez

Patent number: 8521808Abstract: A mechanism is provided for a non-root-level user to execute command line script files via a generic command line interface. A command line interface in the data processing system receives a shellscript command from a non-root-level user via a client system. A security module in the data processing system determines whether the non-root-level user is logged on at a command line interface shell level access. Responsive to the non-root-level user being logged on at the command line interface shell level access, a storage controller at the request of a command line interface identifies a script file associated the shellscript command in a storage of the data processing system. The storage controller executes the script file and the command line interface sends the results of the execution of the script file to the non-root-level user via the client system.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2010Date of Patent: August 27, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Basheer N. Patent number: 8127128Abstract: Exemplary methods, systems, and computer program product embodiments for synchronizing a swappable module between modular computer systems are provided. Each of the embodiments has dual controllers and distributed copies of states. Upon an insertion of the swappable module in a storage system, a plurality of storage components are queried, including a partner swappable module, to determine if a quorum of identification information is present. If the quorum is present, at least one of the plurality of storage components having non-matching identification information is overwritten with the identification information of the quorum. If the quorum is not present, a reset to default procedure is performed. The reset to default procedure designates at least as many storage components of the plurality of storage components with the identification information sufficient to constitute the quorum.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2009Date of Patent: February 28, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Basheer N. Bristow, Jason J. Graves, Shah Mohammad Rezaul Islam

Patent number: 8099634Abstract: A mechanism is provided for autonomic component service state management for a multiple function component. The mechanism determines whether independent functions within a multiple function service boundary can be serviced. When a single function experiences a failure that requires service, repair, or replacement, the surviving functions notify the service management software of the state of the independent functions. The service management software then determines the state of the overall component and implements the appropriate service method.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 2008Date of Patent: January 17, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Linda V. Benhase, Basheer N. Bristow, Robert A. Kubo, Gregg S. Lucas

Publication number: 20100238037Abstract: A method is disclosed to alert a system administrator of a failure condition within a distributed system having a chassis, a management module, and one or more devices installed in the chassis. Such a method may initially identify whether a device within the chassis has encountered a failure condition. The method may then determine whether the device requires removal from the chassis based on the failure condition. The method may cause a visual fault indicator associated with the device to assume a first illuminated state in the event the device requires removal. The method may cause the visual fault indicator to assume a second illuminated state in the event the device does not require removal. If communication with a management module is possible, a visual fault indicator on the chassis may assume a third illuminated state if the device requires removal. A corresponding apparatus and computer-program product are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2009Publication date: September 23, 2010Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Basheer N.
