    Abstract: The present specification discloses a composition in powdered form, suitable for filling the interstices between the conductors and the outer sheath of telecommunications cables, which comprises (1) from about 80%-99% by weight of a pulverulent material having a high water absorption capacity, and more particularly, between about 30% and about 70% by weight of a finely divided cellulosic material, e.g. wood flour, and from 29% to about 75% by weight of gypsum in powdered form; and (2) from about 1% to about 20% by weight of a water modifying and immobilizing material, preferably a cellulose ether such as hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. Desirably the composition also contains a small amount of a bactericidal and/or fungicidal agent such as zinc oxide.
